Default Computer Restore?

I have just looked inside my computer to detect a possible fan problem. It has been "reving" up and down like a fan is going out. Upon putting the computer back together I restarted it and it didn't connect to the internet. It was up as usual but didn't connect. I shut it down and then rebooted my wireless so that they would sync up upon the next restart.

Well now I have a black screen and it says that it isn't finding system config files and to restart with boot disk and go to "r" for repair. I can't find my disk and I was thinking that maybe somebody had a trick to get to another screen so that I could restore my computer to it's settings yesterday.

How do I restore the 'puter to yesterdays settings from this error screen?

Thanks in advance,

MarlinMark

Sounds to me like you pulled the hard drive cable off the hard drive by accident when you opened up the case? Open it up and make sure the cable is connected. There will be a data ribbon cable or SATA cable and a power cable. The power cable will be white on the connector. Check this and let me know.

First I'd try to shut the power off and let it sit a bit ( unplug it if you have to ). If you have the same problem when you power up the F8 will take to safe mode ( should take you to safe mode ). I would say you have bigger problems than a fan but would have to see more to figure out what. Find a good geek freind and have em take a look.

It wouldn't get that far into the boot process if it wasn't connected. It would say something about not being able to find a bootable device.

Stick with the safe mode as previously mentioned. If that doesn't work, get your operating system CD, put it into your CD drive, and reboot the computer. It should boot off of the CD and, eventualy, ask you if you want to repair the install. It doesn't always work, but it's worth a shot.

How old is the system? Do you smoke or is it real dusty by the tower componant? My money is on bad motherboard. The good news is you should be able to save your data if it is indeed the motherboard.

I've NEVER seen "R for repair" work, even WITH the recovery disk.

If the power supply has been erratic, it could have messed up the data on the hard disk.

I'd say try to boot off a system CD or floppy, and then see if you can read the hard disk. Does the drive make bad noises (clunk, buzz, knock-knock, etc.) ?

WINDOWS sucks, magical recoveries are rare.

The computer was operating fine. It would just "whirr, or rev" after it time to run (get hot) for a bit. I'm going to check connections again and try to see if something is wrong. It started up after the first time so I think everything is connected, I just need to see if I can get the thing to boot windows etc.
