Well...Wheeler sucks! Trolled herring and spinners and K14's and 13's with and w/o wraps on Saturday. Saw 1 fish, it was a chinook and heard of another. They are doing ok in the Nehalem jaws, but the upper bay is still slow. Not sure why, the incoming was a good one!

FM,
Went out yesterday from Warrenton and there was NO line to launch our boat. Went to 10 for 1/2 hr, saw no fish. The water was flat so headed out to the CR buoy. Hooked around 10 fish , 3 hatchery the rest nates. We foul hooked 2 fish which one was a nice 12-14lb hatch but like good people released them both. Finally put a 12lber in the boat. Had at least 8 others hooked but lost them and many other take downs. Headed back in, stopped at #2, dropped lines and within 5 minutes landed 2 hatchery and lost 3. Went into buoy 10 around high slack, lost one and then had a double and landed both. We had 3 rods, landed 6 fish which were 12.5,12,12,10,8,7. Nice day but lost alot of fish. I even kidded my son about padding his fish lips inventory the way he was trying to set the hook

I'm going to post pic's tonight or tomorrow !
Planning to go Thursday but the weather might put an end to that trip

Good Luck to YA !

FM,
I am real new to the ocean as far as fishing it outside of Astoria. We headed past the bar yesterday because it was really flat (2 feet waves) and we wanted to avoid playing bumber boats in the line at 10. We past the jetties and came near a green can in about 35 or 40 feet of water and asked a nearby boat where the CR buoy was and he said it was that green can. Does that sound about right? We never really made it next to the can, just trolled in the general area. I am hearing people talk about 125 foot depths but the water we were in was in the thirty to forty foot range. We plan on getting back out as soon as the weather lets up. I am really hoping to hit a calm bar, for the fishing out in the ocean was far better than I have ever seen in the river. I have a 19 foot Weldcraft Renegade that did really well in the ocean yesterday but after hearing some of the "bar stories", I am a little leary of jumping that thing unless we have 5 feet or less of waves. Thanks bro....

TB you were not at the CR Buoy. It is close to 200 ft deep and about 8 miles from the 10 Buoy. You were likely in the closed control zone. You need to go to the 4 Buoy before you can start fishing. Its about 70 feet deep there. The CR buoy is SouthWest from the Jetty. If you follow the Red buoy line out, eventually you get to the CR. It goes 10 Buoy, 8 Buoy, 6 Buoy, 4 Buoy, 2 Buoy then the CR buoy. These are all red.

Made the decision to stay out of the Buoy 10 zoo this year. Fishing the St. Helens stretch of the Columbia for chinooks. Had 3 take downs today in 40 feet of water and ended up boating a bright hen that was just 1/2 pound short of 40. Took a 21 pounder the trip prior. Only about 6 fish taken in my line out of 8 boats. Saw about 4 others high and low. Still not marking many fish and haven't seen an impressive bite. They are due to start flooding through. Still lotsa of steelhead available...if you feel like chasin' those skinny lil' guys.

Looked like Fishhunter got a nice one !

We had fun today, but the only fish we hooked got loose. It's a heartbreaker when someone's first chinook gets loose. Looked big when it jumped. Slightly copper colored. Tule?

Had someone wrap their prop in my anchor rope. They nicked it up some.

The guy was decent enough to agree to replace it for me.

FM,
Fished Friday through Monday 8/17 -8/20 and got 4 fish. A 25 and 28#er on Friday both on an all red Alvin, another 25#er on Saturday and lost another one both on a silver and chartreuse tipped Alvin, nothing on Sunday, and Monday...well lets say it was cool. Hooked a fish and drifted down past 8 hoglines before I could get the beast in the skiff. It turned out to be a 39# hen and it was on a silver and chartreuse tipped 10 Spot with green and blue tape. This fish kicked my *ss. Drifted around 12:30p.m. (according to the boat next to me) and got back to my anchor just before 1:00p.m. Got back, pulled up, and headed back to the dock...too beat to try for a second. A friend fished in 49' of water and saw a good bite around 2p.m. on Monday and got a 20#er himself. Also, I'd been using a 60" leader and dropper and switched to a 48" leader and dropper and started catching fish. Had been fishing in 47' to 48' feet and switched when a friend called on the radio and told me to come fish in 37' to 42' with him. He'd got two the day before and saw a 43#er next to him that day also. Used “Dr. Juice” on the first three fish and WD-40 only and a piece of chartreuse yarn above the 10Spot. The bite seemed to be around mid-tide this weekend and then again before low tide. Usually there is a good high tide bite but haven't seen it yet. Could be because the AM tides were pre-dawn last weekend. Saw 5 or 6 fish caught on rainbow alvins...some blue and some green. Saturday and Monday seemed to be the best days from what I saw....but nothing fantastic.

David

Oh yea, forgot, fished the Columbia between Martin Bluffs and Bachlor Flats. Can't be too specific...risk being keelhauled by my buddies on the water.

I see that most of the folks here are from Orygun, but I won't hold that against you.

Took my five year old and a friend of mine up to Sekiu this weekend and we brought a total of 86 fish to the boat. 18 kings, 6 humpies, and 62 silvers. The kings were not anything to write home about, 5-10 lbs, but we did catch one humpy that was 8.2 pounds cleaned! Do you folks have them down there?

The big hook noses have started to show in the straights of Juan de Fuca, (don't edit this, it really exists and I don't even know a Juan). We released a number of them up to about 13 pounds, and took home a few big hatcheries over 10 pounds.

Beginning September 1st, the selective fishery on silvers changes to any silver, so it will be freezer stocking time with some HUGE silvers.

Sat through 8 hours of tide yesterday and only saw 2 fish taken out of 5 healthy hoglines. About ready to give up, when we got 2 hookups in about 5 minutes as the tide slowed. A broken leader and a spit hook kept the fishbox empty, however.

Heading out this afternoon. Hope springs eternal for the fish-hearted!
