Joe Torre
Joe Torre turned down 5 million for next year. A pay cut of 2.5 million. Will don mattingly take his place? George, you are a fool.

Re: Joe Torre
I was a little surprised to hear this earlier today. Mattingly, girardi(spelling?) or someone else??? Ending of a era for the yanks for sure. I think alot of those vets are gonna be gone also. Posada, petite, clemens, rivera possibly.

Re: Joe Torre
Good for Joe ! He put in his time and got them where they were supposed to be. Maybe they offered that low so he would do himself in...and not manage??? I heard that Mattingly is not an option. Dusty got a contract.....who else is out there who might be available???

Re: Joe Torre
George Costanza and "The Stein" ruined Yankee baseball. All goes back to the cotton uniforms idea.

Re: Joe Torre
There was another 3 mil in performance bonuses, bringing the package up to 8 mil. I guess he figured the yanks couldn't perform anymore.

Re: Joe Torre
Joe is my hero. I am a Yankee fan and I think he did the right thing. He is the best manager in baseball....ever. The Yankee players will miss him. Steinbrenner and his boys will never admit a mistake was made and the Yankees will not enjoy the success like they have. Hide and watch.

Re: Joe Torre
I'm not a Yankee fan, but I do think Torre was a great manager. Who else has to put up with the crap he does from the owner? I think we're going to start seeing the revolving door of managers in New York again. Nobody's able to please Steinbrenner, and not many are able to put up with him for long.
The Yankees will still be a wildcard team at least, no matter who manages them. They simply have too much talent and too much money to get more talent.

I wouldn't say they "let him go." They offered him $2.5 million less than he has been making. If they really wanted to keep him, the offer would have been very different.

Dam I love irony.
I am not one of those that thinks the world is coming to an end now that the Yankees manger for the last 12 years is leaving. Mr. Torre is a great manager and will end up in the Baseball Hall of Fame. However it is possible the Yankess have become less than fully motivated and a change is in order. Sometimes change is good. I think Mr Torre was a players mangager and they let him down. It is time for a course change and a few of the over paid Yankee players need to hit the road. That said what a great run the Yankees had for the last 12 years and who said money can't buy world titles? They were wrong as George was good for the game IMHO..
