Default World Record river sport caught chinook salmon!

Marty M. reported the largest sport caught chinook salmon ever was landed recently in NW B.C.'s Skeena River - 99.1 lbs! It could have been a Kalum R. bound fish. Many Kings over 100 lbs. go up that tributary, but sport anglers haven't been able to land one in the fast gradient water there - yet. It also could have been a Skeena mainstem fish or other trib fish. ...

The story:

Thanks Marty.

Edit: The pic of the huge 'nook is at the same angle over the fisherman's shoulder as Angle This' 19 ft. sturgeon pic. With the men closer to the camera it makes the fish look smaller than what they are. However, judging by the pics, if AT's fish was about 19' long, or even 9' long, the big King seemingly should have measured even longer than it did? Pics can do funny things to fish though. They can make a small trout look big, and conversely a giant hog look only big. ...

Quote, "We practice catch and release", and then after they landed the fish - quote, "we released it after about 10 MINUTES"??????

I went back and read all of the article, and I agree with RW's questioning of keeping the fish out of the water that long - despite it being a record fish. It was a buck, so keep it; or let it go as healthy as possible. I have met and visited with Noel Gieger and he seemed like a responsible type guide. ...

On a side note; some fish bios have contended that the same genetics are present in average sized fish from the same run. And it's more beneficial to release the hens - which is hard to get many fishers to do because of the eggs. ...

On another side note; many fish are bigger this year because of such plentiful ocean feed. I'm sure that helped get that trophy sized feesh in the Skeena R. bigger.

RT,

A couple of thoughts on this article. First, it was caught in the spawning area above the Kalum. I've fished this river before and that area does get thick with hawgs. Judging by the colors in the fish, and understanding that the bigger ones color up faster, I would think it was a mainstemmer that was prespawn.
I have also read plenty of info that says fish from a certain gene pool have the same chance to throw offspring that are hawgs, whether they're large or small.
My question is...since nooks mate up and the bucks milt over one hens' eggs, isn't it just as important to have them around as it is to have the hens? Otherwise, all thats left are the pesky little jacks fertilizing the buckless hens' eggs.

Saltine - a buck potentially can scatter his milt over several other batches of eggs, whereas a hen can only do her thing to benefit her species in a more centralized area. Of course, you probably already knew that; that's for the ones that didn't.

'Yall,

What I don't know is once the pair is a pair, do the bucks stray and fert other hens eggs. I've never heard or seen anything on this so I assumed they were somewhat monogamous, understanding that some of their milt may end up in someone else's bed from the current. Thanks for the insight.
