Gifts for the garbage man?
For starters, I apologize for starting the Christmas thing early, and yes, I know it's not even Halloween yet, but...
We have a really awesome garbage man, or "refuse disposal person," who has now twice stopped his truck and made sure our garbage was picked up, even though the can was not by the road. We live in a sem-rural area, so we only get service every two weeks. With two kids in diapers, going a month without garbage service would not be too pretty.
So, how do you tip someone for that kind of service? We're thinking a Christmas bonus might be in order, but how much and how do you get it to him? I have already called the company he works for to let them know we appreciate it.

Yes, he's with WOW. Doesn't necessarily have to be given at Christmas, just thought that would be the most obvious time to show we appreciate what he does.

Re: Gifts for the garbage man?
Well, I usually show up with a lot of the stuff he hauls off! I'm a letter carrier. This last Christmas there were several of my customers who left coffee gift cards for me and those were greatly appreciated! Especially through the colder months! I'm very fortunate though to have a very "personable" route where I have very frequent contact with my customers and they know me and what my hobbies are and such. I've received other gift cards for WalMart, Joes and Sportsmans Warehouse. I've also received some of the local favorites such as toffee and other goodies made right here in our town.
Yes, I also make sure that I get treats for all the good canine friends on my route too!! There are a lot of them that's for sure!
Fortunately there are more good than bad on my route!
Just know that whatever you do if you put your heart in it, it will show and he'll enjoy it. Those of us in service occupations who like what we do appreciate just about any kind of "Thanks"!!

Re: Gifts for the garbage man?
I spread my gift giving for the garbage man throughout the year:
Dead animal heads
Duck carcasses
Fish carcasses
etc...
At least in the winter they can usually last out there a week without smelling up the neighborhood too bad

Yes, nothing says "job well done" like a bottle of whiskey, and a bucket of chum.
But I do like the Leatherman idea. And thanks, Chug, for your help.

Re: Gifts for the garbage man?
I have WOW as well, just make sure the gifts goes to the right driver. If your driver is on vacation, the replacement driver for his route may end up with a nice gift. Thanks for the reminder also, got to get my driver something for the holidays.

Don't put 19 tuna carks in the can on Saturday when garbage day isn't till Tuesday or at least freeze them first next time.

Re: Gifts for the garbage man?
Melissa, you are indeed sweet and thoughtful..
Speaking from experience, as I was once a sanitation engineer....and now I have owned my own refuse and recycling company for sometime now..It was always very well appreciated when my customers took the time to show their thankfulness during the holidays or any other time..
In the summer when it is hot, a cold non-alcoholic beverage is always nice, and of course in those cold days, a hot cup of JOE or hot chocolate is satisfying..
As for the holidays, a gift certificate, a box of candy, or even some homemade baked goods go a long way...
Keep up the nice gestures Melissa...

He'll probably take the garbage out of your house and down to curbside for you after that.
Seriously, make sure he can accept something (Company policies and all) or make sure you have a way to get it to them without leaving it by the curb. Remember, the garbage man won't be the only one cruising the curbs looking for gifts that time of year...put it in his hands.

Chug helped me figure out how to get it to him. I probably won't get him anything we wouldn't appreciate ourselves. Since the occasional bottle of blackberry wine or Bailey's is about all we go for, it looks like our sanitation engineer will be getting a Leatherman or some $ this year...which is more than we'll be giving each other.

Re: Gifts for the garbage man?
JF Nailed it. Bought the garbage man a pint of crown last year. My can is always upright and on the curb, the lid secured. Cant say as much for the neighbors can still on the street, the lid about 10' away....

My garbage man drives up, a big clamp come out and hoists the can up. If some spills out, it stays on the street. If he doesn't run the arm right, half my garbage stays in the can for next week.
GIFT? I think not.

I was thinking that true service had left when they started using loaders. Couple weeks ago, I was late getting the can out - don't know what I wasn't thinking - he saw me in his rear view mirror and backed up 1/2 block to get my can. I know just a little effort, but it showed me that dispite being in a machine that does most of the work these guys still care to provide their service.
We have a weight limit and I know they have load sensors on those arms, I didn't get billed extra for those 19 tuna carks and I'm sure he lived with that stench all day.
He'll get a gift this year,

1. wash his garbage truck.
2. green tree air freshner left on the mirror.
Does Hallmark have a card for these moments?
I do like the bottle of CR though!
How about a personal thankyou?

Re: Gifts for the garbage man?
I would like to leave something but fear either kids will get it or they will just toss it in with the trash...
...that and I am a little burned for having to pay for "an extra bag" because someone set a fast-food bag next to our trash can. What's up with that? more than 1/2 the time the garbage can is only 60% full, too.

Nothing says merry christmas like a twenty dollar bill taped to the garbage can lid in an envelope. Our thrash smells so bad that no one but the trash dude goes near it
