Who among us regularly volunteers with ODFW & other f & W oriented volunteerism
NOTE: I've broadened the topic, for those who do other things, eventhough my (personal interest) was ODFW. Don @ 10/18/07 @ 12:26 pm.
Please don't turn this into a "why I don't/won't" discussion - - - 'just wondering who among us is regularly doing volunteer work for the ODFW.
I just finished setting-up my volunteer activities for this fall. Sunday, I'll be riding with one of the biologists and obtaining obex and lymph node samples for the CWD surveillance project. October 27th and 28th, my brother and I will help operate the West side CWD check station at Stimpson's main gate near Henry Hagg Lake. And then the evening of November 19th, I'll be taking part in the spotlighting survey.

Re: Who among us regularly volunteers with ODFW?
Not ODFW, but with fishery bios working for Federal agencies like USFS. And fishing/conservation organizations doing their own projects.
Actually, with some exceptions like broodstock, ODFW doesn't begin to utilize volunteers like they could.

Re: Who among us regularly volunteers with ODFW?
That sounds interesting.
I would like to volunteer to catch some sturgeon and bring them to the bank to give to the hatchery at bonnie so they can restock the pond.
Don if that is an option with ODFW let me or us know.

Re: Who among us regularly volunteers with ODFW?
I had been volunteering with ODFW at the Siletz Falls fish trap every Monday for two years or so until the spring of 2006. After a little time off, I am going back starting in November. My son, "Sparkleboy", is a bio with ODFW and he runs the Mill Creek trap on the Siletz (among others) and I hope to volunteer with him also. I feel it is very rewarding to give back to ODFW for all that they do for fishing. It is also a blast to get into a trap full of fish. If I can't fish for them I might as well play with them. SG

Re: Who among us regularly volunteers with ODFW?
Did 8 years on the STAC board, many more years than that doing STEP projects ranging from electrofishing, hatchboxes, to tree plantings. Used to do the annual spring spotlight surveys and last winter did a day time elk census with the district bio. All time well spent, wished we had more volunteer projects that were worthwhile.

There's a few of us Salty Dogs that serve on the ODFW Marine Resources Program's Sportfish Advisory Committee. We help advise the team on bag limit proposals and such to help keep our fisheries open as long as possible, while staying within state & federally mandated caps.

Re: Who among us regularly volunteers with ODFW?
Not directly with the ODFW but I do different volunteer activities throughout the year through ANWS of which some overlap with ODFW. In the newsletter I get from ODFW I noticed the request for deer survey people. That interested me so I may be contacting them about doing this in the future as well.

Re: Who among us regularly volunteers with ODFW?
The question was for ODFW. I haven't volunteered since I did an internship at Jewel.

I volunteered my services for 14 years to ODFW. Health reasons slowed me down.
Enjoyed the time.

Re: Who among us regularly volunteers with ODFW?
Not too much during the fall since it's hunting season but I donate a lot of time during the spring & summer. This was a typical year: I volunteered at one youth turkey clinic, two youth shotgun skills clinics, one habitat improvement project, testified at the legislature to support ODFW-OHA bills several times, and attended a half dozen or so misc ODFW meetings.

Re: Who among us regularly volunteers with ODFW & other f & W oriented volunteerism
I've been teaching 3 to 8 Hunter ed courses annually since 1996 or '97, have been an instructor for several Master Hunter classes, and a cameraman for the deer decoy program.
Great fun, all of it; but the latter activity really adversely impacted my perception of the hunting public.

Re: Who among us regularly volunteers with ODFW & other f & W oriented volunteerism
I volunteer for many different aspects of fish and the politics that surround them.
I have volunteered for bank clean ups and stream surveys through my local basin council. I have trained with DEQ to do water quality and macro-invertebrate sampling. (loved reverse titrating D-O samples)
I served on last summers Salmon River Estuary planning workgroup through the U.S. Forest Service.
I have served on an ODFW Workgroup for designing a release strategy for a new broodstock program.
I participated in the taskforce phase of the creation of ODFW’s Native Fish Conservation Policy.
I took part in the workgroup that created ODFW’s Hatchery Management Policy.
I took part in the workgroup that created ODFW’s Interim Criteria for the NFCP.
I have taken time out to go to many Commission, budget and informational meetings and have found them invaluable. I would not hesitate to do them all again. The only thing I would do different is I would have brought a recorder to them all…

Oh yes, love the tritration for D/O. Blue, blue, blue, clear! Got a little DEQ training too.
Have conducted extensive temperature and turbidity data collecting for Izaak Walton League/ Watershed council/DEQ.
Just finished a temperature interaction study for Lake Vernonia and the Nehalem river.
Collected DNA samples for ODF&W/NMFS, on Nehalem chinook. This was fun.
Conducted spawning surveys for ODF&W for Chinook and Coho in the upper Nehalem basin.
Collected macroinverterbrate samples for the local watershed council.
ODF&W trained to do stream surveys.
Ran a downstream migrant pipe trap for a number of years. Info went to ODF&W.
Started the stream side tree planting program in the upper Nehalem with the Izaak Walton League, sure glad the watershed council took over, they are doing a great job and my back feels a whole lot better!
Sat on a westside elk management committee.
Conducted around 1700 miles of deer spotlight surveys for the Izaak Walton League and ODF&W.
Conducted deer population census surveys using pellet group counts for the Izaak Walton League.
Sat on the boards of STAC, North Coast Game Association, Upper Nehalem River Watershed Council and Nehalem Izaak Walton League.
Gee, when did I have time to do anything else? I sure did learn a lot.

Re: Who among us regularly volunteers with ODFW & other f & W oriented volunteerism
Like others, I have a varied past of volunteering for fish and wildlife related issues and activities.
Helped reform the Middle Rogue Watershed Council back in the 90's.
Helped organize stream cleanup that received SOLV's "project of the year" award for 1999.
Have thrown many Coho carcasses into Taylor Creek for habitat enhancement.
Several years (two terms) on BLM Resource Advisory Committee for the Medford District.
Six years on ODFW Fish Screening Task Force.
Many meetings to lobby for various ODFW issues.
Traveled to Washington DC to lobby for removal of Savage Rapids Dam (SRD) on Rogue.
Countless times offering testimony at various meetings regarding removal of SRD.
Hundreds of letters and guest opinions concerning SRD.
Manage my eight acres on Rogue trib. to be fish and wildlife friendly and offer assistance and advice (solicited or not..... ) to neighbors along the creek I reside on.

I am interested in helping out but where is the best place to find out about what opportunities are available?
I have heard about fin clipping, but what else is out there?

Re: Who among us regularly volunteers with ODFW & other f & W oriented volunteerism
On the ODFW web site, they have an e-mail sign up. They regularly send out announcements of volunteer opportunities for committee work. But there are also opportunities to do things like plant carcases or put debris in rivers to help with smolts or to screen irrigation ditches or teach intro classes. Check THIS out as a starting point.
