Default Where are the salmon/steelies?

Bout you know what time!! I FINALLY have a friend offering to take me out to teach me to fish for the big boys...problem is, I have one day to do it where our schedules match...the Monday of Labor Day weekend. We will have time for a day trip from Portland. Where should we go? Where is the action the hottest??

You did not think I was going to let a true Texan off that easy did you? I am sure you will get some real answers by someone, but could not resist. Guess I am a bad boy, bored and waiting for the NETS to go away. There are some real answers in the quiz too though.

Ya'll "indoctrinated" me way down yonder in Texas, so I wanted to make sure you have at least obtained your Oregon visa and local educational materials.

2. What state borders Oregon on the north? _______________________________

I love it! Frenchglen a "city"! When I was there last year only about 6 people lived there year round. The hardware/tackle/grocery store was unlocked and unattended. The proprietors rented me a bedroom in their house, then took off for Burns for a few days. What a lovely place ... as much a state of mind as a place. Fishing in the Donner and Blitzen is worth the drive. And on the way home over Hart mountain I stopped at a funky hot springs posted with a sign that warned: "Nude bathers must look poor". OK, I look poor.

Take your pick from bouy 10 to Bonni or above although you might be limited by quotas I believe below Meggler Br.

My pick is a Silver Alvin (not crome) with a large treble and green tubing on the hook. Why drive when you can nail them in town. Good luck!

Pete, there really isn't more than 6 people living in that area! Hard to believe they would put Frenchglen on that map, but not Burns or Hines? The little restuarant/hotel is a neat place isn't it, though? IMO, they have the best cornbread and "better than sex chocolate cake."

Those redbands are pretty plentiful and grow fairly big in the Blitzen. I have seen some big one's in there, but the biggest one I've caught was like 18 inches. They have to really be toasting in there now with all the low water.

In about three or four months you're gonna be "Cold Texan!"

Now, I'm just learning myself, but I imagine it's like finding a "round-up" or "ho-down" (whatever they are). When you see a bunch of cowboys, pick-em-up trucks and a million head of cattle, you're there. Except in this case you're looking for boats, fisherman, bent rods and big fishies!

By the way, did you get through ******'s test O.K.? I passed it my third try. I had a hard time finding Oregon on the map.

Yeah, that was helpful...now I know where to go fish for salmon/steelhead with my friend when we go out for my first outing for those fish. Oh wait...no, I still dont. I get the feeling that this board is probably more useful if/when you are part of the regular "community" that exists in here, have a boat, do this all time, blah blah blah. I am a newby to all this and am simply looking for information to get started in this sport. Fly fishing for trout is easy...but salmon and steelhead I am clueless. I will look elsewhere for information and assistance.

Not holding a grudge here or anything, and not throwing a fit...just tired of posting looking for information or opportunities to learn something or to get involved, and either getting no responses, or unrelated responses, or very few.

However, I did enjoy the posts about the 40 foot sturgeon (I figure its grown since then, so i am estimating its current size).

I'll lurk from time to time probably, but will focus my efforts to books, other sites, etc. to get started. See you on the rivers!

Cool Texan:

Here are your options from the bank.

1. Stay close to home and explore the Clackamas. It opens on the first of Sept. and will soon be chuck full of silvers. The more popular bank spots are the first riffle just below the 99E Bridge and at the mouth of Eagle Creek. I would recommend purchasing a copy of Fishing in Oregon to help you out with other spots. BTW, this book is an indispensible resource for the pursuit of salmon and steelhead throughout Oregon.

2. Head over to the Lower Deschutes. There should be lots of fish. Just hike up about 5 miles and fish your way down.

3. Upper Wilson River. Depending on the weather in the near future, these fish should start to become more active. Do a search on this board to find out about RT's banner day last year.

These are just a few suggestions. I would stay away from any kind of plunking on the Columbia. Sure, there are lots of fish in there right now, but by fishing these other streams you will learn much more applicable skills and techniques from your new teacher.

Good Luck,

CnD

Sorry Tex, probably my fault for too much razin'. Did not want you to take it that hard. If you check back on some of your posts and attitude, sometimes the locals are gonna' give you back what you dish up.

What you are asking for is all over this website.

(****** says...MAN am I glad I am here in cyberspace and not in a Texas town right now with the locals upset at me, oh boy)

Anyway. Peace, my sick fun obviously taken too far.

o Check out all the Buoy 10 posts, everything you ever wanted to know. Within a day trip.

o Anchor fishing in the current on the Columbia with spinners, plugs, wobblers, spin'n glo, spin'n glos with eggs, spin'n glo with prawns, on and on. Your friend should know this river though and have the right equipment. Within a day trip. Rigging suggestions all over this website.

o Nehalem appears to be kicking out a few fish in the bay and tidewater. Posts are starting on this subject. Use the search feature.

o Hire a dang good guide instead, you will both learn and hopefully score. Again, not to imply you or your friend needs to, but if you only have a day, a good option too. Check em' out at this website. Labor day weekend could be crowded. Sit back and fish?

Rick

Geeezz Tex . . . .
Lighten up. Just having a little fun at your expense. I'm new to this area and the whole salmon/steelhead thing too. chuck 'n' duck had some hot tips. The Deschutes is likely to be crowded on a holiday weekend, but that's an opportunity for a little chit chat (do guys chit chat?), I mean, chew the fat, or shoot the breeze for a few [minutes] with new acquaitances. You know the routine, "How'd you do? Watcha catch 'em on? etc. etc.".
Here's another tip. Before Labor Day, leave your gear at home, put on your hiking shoes, explore and talk to the local fisherman. Do it a bunch. Fish, explore and learn, fish, explore and learn. . .
Many of my best learning experiences are with my gear in the car.
Good Luck

Sorry guys...had a bad day yesterday. Didnt mean to come across the wrong way. I can roll with the punches, take a joke, etc. I am getting a lot of great offers to go out fishing with folks, and i really appreciate it.

******...I look forward to the day that my catch rivals yours, you look in awe at my mountain of fish (including a 19 foot sturgeon), I buy you a beer, and we laugh about this exchange.

So should I change my screen name to Oreeeguhn Texuhhn?

No problem. Actually the biggest turn off for me is making the catching part "the serious world series of fishing competition."

I can tell you from experience, this get's very old over time. It's all about being out there with good people. The catching is the very nice gravy for sure.

There are a bunch of "legends in their own mind" out there, and trust me, they ain't.

Good fortune to you in all pursuits.
