OFFICIAL Ifish Photo Contest #6 - ACTION SHOTS!!!
IFISH PHOTO CONTEST - THEME #6 - ACTION SHOTS!!!
The theme for the fourth Ifish photo contest is action... Ifish member Cromoflage requested 'Action Shots' for the next theme, so that's what we are going to do. I try not to suggest any particular subject, this time we looking see past or present photographs that bring action to the imagination.
To be considered for this contest your picture or pictures (2 maximum) related to 'action shots' must be posted on this thread no later than midnight on October 31st, 2007.
Before entering, please read the contest rules posted here: CONTEST RULES
Remember, even if you are not going to enter the contest you can still participate by being a judge or donating a prize!
With regard to this thread, feel free to ask questions of the photographer or discuss the photographs posted, but lets keep it positive.
The prizes for the winning 'action shots' photograph is yet to be determined, we have a few, but haven't decided on which ones this time. As soon as I know I will post it on this thread. If someone wants to donate a prize, we would be grateful, please PM me.
HAVE FUN!!!
- Brad

Re: OFFICIAL Ifish Photo Contest #6 - ACTION SHOTS!!!
Here's my first entry. It's a pic from the mountain biking adventure my buddy Tom and I had on Sunday. It was taken with my Canon Powershot S3 IS on "shutter speed priority" mode. I think it had a shutter speed of 1/125 with the flash on and a polarizing filter on the lens.

Re: OFFICIAL Ifish Photo Contest #6 - ACTION SHOTS!!!

Snowboarding competition up at Mt. Hood Meadows at the
beginning of the season last year.
Editing: Color adjustment to fix the color of the snow
Canon 20D
Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/800)
Aperture: F/8
Focal Length: 8mm
ISO: 400
Circular polarizer

Family camp trip to Loon Lake this last summer; My aunt Heidi skiing
on the last and nicest day of the trip.
Editing: B/W conversion.
Canon 20D
Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/1600)
Aperture: F/4
Focal Length: 109mm
ISO: 100
I wasn't sure if editing to make a photo black and white is allowed for this competition..
I know the rules state that "artistic corrections for color, etc..." are allowed,
and I'm assuming that this would fall under that category. And I took the image with
the intention of converting it into a black and white image to top it off.. So let me know
if it's allowed, beings as I am unclear on this and I shall act accordingly.
-thanks

My first entry taken with a Nikon D50 on automatic setting (only edits were to crop it). My dog after a swim in the lake. This one makes me laugh...
My second entry was also taken with my Nikon D50 on automatic (I also cropped this one). My sister showing off her lumberjill skills.

Re: OFFICIAL Ifish Photo Contest #6 - ACTION SHOTS!!!
As far as I know [as a judge, b&w conversion is allowed. Judges have also voted on them in the past and even had a winner so , should be a yes.
Very nice photos by the way!

Some good shots here. Hoping to see some indoor sports shots as well.
I got lucky on this one - with my Fuji S5000. I have no idea what f-stop, shutter speed, etc.

Part of the purpose of this contest is to help each other learn things photographic. Unless an image has been edited (and sometimes when it was) the EXIF information is embedded in the displayed image. You can google "free exif reader" and find plugins that will display the EXIF information in the "Properties" when you right mouse-click an image. (except with a Macintosh, which for some reason has no right mouse button )
For your image, I see the following information:
Quote:
Camera Make: FUJIFILM
Camera Model: FinePix S5000
Image Date: 2004:09:01 19:04:44
Flash Used: No
Focal Length: 31.9mm (35mm equivalent: 550mm)
CCD Width: 2.09mm
Exposure Time: 0.0021 s (1/480)
Aperture: f/5.0
ISO equiv: 160
Metering Mode: Matrix
Exposure: program (Auto)
|
Cool, eh?

Nice panning shot Matt! Also, Mokai's shot of the running dog is great. Good color in both.

Re: OFFICIAL Ifish Photo Contest #6 - ACTION SHOTS!!!
Here is my first entry. We were tuna fishing out of Garibaldi when we heard the distress call. Another dog, Crazyfish, was in trouble, taking on water, and engines had died. They were sitting dead in the water, about 30 miles out, and only a couple hours of daylight left. The Coast Guard was called, and a helicopter was dispatched from Hammond. It was able to get there first, before the 2 47' MLB's from Garibaldi.
We moved in to stand alongside Ken, just in case the boat started going down before the copter got there.
The CG deployed a rescue swimmer and threw out a pump to get the water out. I took this picture right as the copter got close enough to launch the pump out. The sound of this happening so close, was unreal, as well as the wind that thing kicked up!
You can see the orange pump, about to get pushed out of the helicopter.
This was taken with a:
Canon Powershot A710 IS.
1/160, f4.8
ISO: ?

Re: OFFICIAL Ifish Photo Contest #6 - ACTION SHOTS!!!
Here is my second entry.
NOTE: Sneaker waves DO exist! My brother had just moved back from Texas, so we headed to the beach to do some fishing. We stopped to take some pictures of the waves by Boiler Bay. We wanted a picture with a wave shooting up behind my brother. We figured since we were a good 50 ft up on the rocks, we'd be okay.
Well this is one of those times when we almost became "that guy".
The first two little pics explain the area, and how high up we were.
These waves were 20-30ft'ers. We got a few pics of some crashing, then shooting up behind him.. But most of those waves would shoot straight up, and fall back to the sea.
This one didn't.
ENTRY #2:
This one climbed right up the backside of the rocks, overpowered, and freight-trained BOTH of us!. Right when I saw that it was that big, I turned my body, covered the camera in my jacket, and the wall of water slammed me to the ground. My brother got the worst of it. He got tossed like a rag doll into the rocks that you see at his feet. He was lucky he didn't get swept over. The funny thing was, his expression is still the same.. Had NO IDEA what was about to happen to him a split second later. haha!
We both walked back up to the car, completely soaked, and proceeded to change clothes. It wasn't til 15 minutes later that I looked back at the camera, wishing I had at least taken a picture of that wave.
Well, I DID! I captured it RIGHT as it overcame my brother!
"I GOT THE SHOT!"
Its definitely one of my best pictures, and probably will be for a long time. Its been blown up to poster-size and framed on his wall.
Disclaimer: Do not try this. We look back and realize how stupid we were, and how badly we could've gotten hurt or even killed. I would hate to see anyone get hurt for a picture. As the cliche says, "we completely underestimated the ocean, waves, and the power it possesses". I look back and realize what a great picture, but would never do that again.

Im all for Sublimes win! That IS THE SHOT! That pic tells alot. And alot of what not to do. Would make a great poster for Sneaker waves. Sublime, you should sell it to the right government offices for their sneaker wave campaign.

Also, notice the rock is dry and seagull poop hasn't been washed away. A testament to the fact the wave were not getting close to that area.
I, being that type of person, would have stood in the same spot. And would have wet myself too.

There's always some kind of action at the Ridgefield Wildlife Refuge- sometimes it's the beauty of nature in action:
but, sometimes it's the brutality of nature in action!

Nikon Cool Pics 380 on auto setting
12,000 pounds of explosives equals 24 million pounds or 20 thousand tons of fractured rock. All this done in about 1.5 seconds.
