Hey JollyRoger, a few years ago we caught some kings along the South Jetty. We had a bad Ocean that day and trolled along the inside of the jetty from the finger jetty to 100 ft from the tip. There used to be a little zig in the jetty about 1/2 way down and some big rocks marked the spot. It seemed like we would hit a fish at that spot everytime. The gear was plugged herring and a Tillamook rig. You know, spreader 3' dropper to a lead ball and 6' mooching leader. The depth seemed to be about 20 ft. we caught four and it was late July. I've done this several times now and had pretty good success.

I have also heard tell of people trolling around the fish ladder for the Ore Aqua salmon farm (now Defunct) and getting bit there. This is in the summer also. Maybe Wakem or RJ can shed more light on this subject.

If you live near Yaquina and have a decent boat you could always fish the Rockpile. It's a big ocean drive (17 miles) but there are always people mooching Chinook every time I go there. Catching them too. Capn Dan's dad bagged a 25# fish last Friday while we fished for flatties. Just drop a 10 oz trolling weight plugged herring and mooching rig to the bottom and crank it up 10 turns or so. Work it up and down or put it in the rod holder.

Tip, leave your drag loose, they hit hard.

Good luck!

You might think about the Siletz also. It is only about 20 miles north of Newport and gets a pretty decent run of chinook. Fishing starts September 1rst.

hey jolly Roger really no secret here timing seems to be the ticket the Yaquina year in and year out seems to start kicking fish out around the first week of october fish will sometimes hold up for a few days in the riverbend area if your not familiar with that area its the next inside corner 2 miles or so above the natural gas tank we also launch at the public boat ramp at toledo and fish the next two corners upriver they both produce fish.troll flasher and plug cut herring seems to be about the norm also several caught each year on the blue fox type spinners. we usually run a two foot dropper and 4 ft to 5 ft of leader and make sure we can feel the lead touch the bottom every now and then. good luck RJ

I have found that the Chinooks like to follow the bait into the bay, which does not happen with equal intensity every year. This year is a very good year. Try mooching a plug-cut herring within a couple feet of the bottom in a big circle from Sawyers down to in front of the Green Tank.

Default Yaquina Salmon Secrets?

I have been having a great time fishing B-10 lately but I must admit that 460 miles round trip does take a toll. Can anyone offer any insight on fishing the Yaquina Bay/river? Timing, gear, methods for Salmon.

jollyroger,

Thats pretty good info from RJ. We also did pretty good between Toledo and Newport last year around the 21 or 25 buoy, mile and a half or so inland from the Newport marina, just trolling herring.

jollyroger,
There ia a public launch between Elk City and and Toledo. Ive seen a lotof guys fighting fish as I have driven along the river.
Acording to the guy that runs the store in Elk City, Dark colored spinners are the ticket. He showed me some of the best producing spinners. They all had dark colored paint (black, Dark Blue) on the front of the blade. The back of the blades were polished brass. The spinners were bigger, Size 6 and 7.
You can also use bobber and eggs. I wont go into any detail on this, If I did, I risk castration.
October seems to be the month that produces the most fish.
