Default 19 foot sturgeon

Jennie is posting the photo today so all the skeptics may bow down before me and eat their words! Sorry it took so long, I've been too busy killing mass quantities of salmon on the ocean while all the lightweights bob up and down on each other's wakes at bouy 10....Ha!!!!

Let me know when its up...I like seeing the pics of the HUGE fish.

Unlike the others, I am not jealous of your claims of a great outing. Instead, I wish i had been there to catch some big ones...my fly rod on the rivers doesnt catch too many whoppers.

Would love to see it. I think you can understand the skepticism, Angle.

Just for my sarcastic friends, does it look anything like this?

I am a Texan, this is true. But Oregon is my home now, and I'll probably never leave this beautiful area. However, Texas pride is not without merit...for it is a state that was fought for time and time again. Being from there is a source of pride for many. Those who mock, simply dont get it...but that's ok, we still love them...just a little bit less.

Uhhh, yeah. Nice fish. 18-19 foot nice, no freakin way, but nice fish. I really hope I am just looking at the wrong picture here, cause the one I see looks like about a 7-8 foot fish, maybe 9. Maybe it's just a REALLY BAD camera angle, but I don't think so. Adrenaline does funny things to your eyes, but pictures don't lie (without digital help).

BIG sturgeon below, tell me if these have bigger heads or not. You can see the body of one, its about a 8-9 footer if you figure the guy holding the tail is around 6 feet tall.

(these are off the web somewhere)

one more :

from webpage at
www.bcsturgeon.com/photos2.html
They MEASURED it at 12 feet 4 inches.

I dunno, maybe I'm missing something here....

I said I'd believe it when I saw it. I believe it to be a very nice 9-12' gator. With no real reference in the water, and most of the fish not visable, I'm not biting.

Sorry AngleT, a 19' fish would have a 3-4 foot head, I just can't get there from this picture.

Nice try Angle. About 8 or 9 foot maybe. Having caught and released "hundreds" of these I think I'm safe with this assumption.

Texan, relax. I graduated from Garland High School and had to take more Texas history since I was from out of state and there for only a year (MK), then you did probably. In any case, as you state, you are in Oregon now.

Man Angle you need some glasses and a tape measure, fur sure fur sure.

Hmmm, having caught a lot of 8-9' and a few 10'ers this fish looks a lot like them. Unless for some reason it was abnormaly skinny and long. doubtful though. The Fish in BOE's post is bigger then the 19' so it must be around 25' then huh BOE

Oh come on guys don't make fun of Angle when you might not know the facts. This particular sturgeon could be disproportionate(sp). It could just be really long and not as fat and wide as a normal sturgeon. Good lookin' fish though.

If that sturgeon is 19 feet long, I'm at least 15 1/2 feet tall.

I had a sturgeon to my boat (18') that was close to the same length as the distance between my forward and aft mooring cleats. We were able to get three hands in its gnarly maw. Its head was three times that size and I guestimated its length at a conservative 10'. Using the Frasier River length/weight chart, a 161 inch (that's 13.4166 feet for those without a calculator) would weigh approximately 1348 lbs. PULL THAT TO YOUR BOAT!

Sorry, BS flags are flying too high for me.

Hey Tex', if you saw how large 'BIGSTEW' is in person you would know that steelhead is all of 35 lbs. ...

And Angle', I noticed you wearing glasses in the pic of your 19' sturgeon. I will pay you to wear those same glasses and measure a part of my anatomy and post the results here on ifish. There is an old joke....why isnt Texas an island in the gulf? Cuz Oklahoma sucks!

And we didnt steal it...we fought them for it fair and square. Actually, at the battle of the Alamo it was hardly fair, and the mission fell. However, we would fight again...Viva La Texas!

As soon as I get it scanned, I'll post the picture of the 12 foot rainbow trout I caught in the Rock Creek a while back.

Didn't notice it at the first go, but judging by the sides of the boat indicate that it isn't even 19 feet.

Here's the weight length chart for you affecinados:
http://www.worldstar.com/~dlarson/sturgeon/weights.htm

By the way, I measured the distance between my cleats and it came out to 12 feet. The fact that the tail hung so low in the water, I'm sticking to my 10 foot theory for error factor.

This story is too tall, even for a Texan.

Hey Jen,

Don't feel too bad. When it comes to oversized sturgeon, that picture is of a shaker.

If any of the Ifishers want to proof of the pudding, the oversize bite is still good below Bonneville.

I'm available on the 30th and would even be willing to give up a salmon quest to prove this point.

I'll scan some fotos and submit them tomorrow!

Mo, you can tell the story below, but here is what was in his letter:
It took over an hour to get the fish to the boat and resulted in a snapped rod. The old boy that got the fish ain't no light weight and he was whipped when he got to the finish line.

Thanks Jen. That's basically the story and this is what I'm calling a 10 footer, estimated weight by the chart 542 lbs. Even shaving off 100 lbs still leaves some serious weight.

I guess everyone is concentrating on Buoy 10, no takers for the 30th yet... hmmmmm.

Do you know how to tell when a fisherperson is lying? The story starts off: "I ain't lying, it was THIS big".

How can you tell a fisherman (lawyer, car salesman, politician) is lying?

Their lips are moving!

Man, those are some HUGE fish and with huge fish, come even BIGGER tales. Is there even one among us who hasn't embellished a fish story at least once in our lives?

As the saying goes--- Ifish, therefore I lie.

Sorry, Jen, couldn't resist, I HAD to spell it that way, .

Is that Paul Bunyan with that fish in his hands? Perhaps that 19 foot fish is standing with its tail on the bottom of the Columbia? The fish finder read 19 feet.

If you want to see a monster sturgeon picture, Tom's outboard in Milwaukie.has one on the wall in there of an old timer standing next to a 22 footer pulled up on the bank when it was legal to do that. Looks like the body is about 4' plus in diameter. If you're ever in there, check it out. Has anyone else seen this pic?

Sorry Angle, I think we both know that isn't even close to 19' but hey, it makes for good conversation.

I've seen plenty of photos of large sturgeon over ten feet, but haven't seen the one at Tom's. I remember back in the late 70's (78-79ish) there was a good 1200 lb one dead on the bottom of Lake Oswego. They took a picture and put it in the local paper.

Rolling on the floor laughing. Hey I just thought Capt. Hook had to have Peter Pan and Tinkerbell along for a 50 pound silver to appear! Guess I missed Hook himself, the watch and the 19 foot crocodile!

Still no one can match my 8 pound crawdad!

I was on that trip with MoJet where the above fish was caught. That fish broke the rod in my hands. Best fishing trip I've ever been on.

Ok SL, inquiring minds want to know why and how found a website in which the dude thinks he is Peter Pan or whatever? He looks familiar; I think he is the guy dating a friend's nephew. Do you also have Tinkerbell's website bookmarked? ...

And Flathead, welcome to ifish. Does your moniker have anything to do with the greatness of Montana's Flathead Lake and river systems? Or are you a member of the Flathead Tribe near there? Or did MoJet just bonk you on top of your head for breaking his favorite sturgeon rod? Inquiring minds want to know this too.
