Default RIPPENLIPS = Ripping Fish Lips (ocean & 10 hot - reports/suggestions)

Ifisher Rippenlips (John), who started the infamous "North River Boats" thread of 600+ posts, does have one heck of a nice boat. It is very similar to SG's (Bill's) NR model - 20' or 21' V-sled with windsheild and top - only John's has the Chevy 350 Vortex engine, which has plenty of power. He took Ifishers Ramstrong (Ryan) and myself, and his friend Kevin out over the bar this morning while it was still ebbing; without a hitch (he left that with the trailer groan). John and his NR made easy work of the choppy bar. ...

The salmon fishing outside was just flat out HOT! Mostly in any 2 mile direction of the CR bouy. In the 3+ hours that we were actually fishing (not counting running time) the 4 of us must have hooked well over 30 fish. Before we kept 8 large clipped silvers we released many wild ones and smaller ones (let's just say they were jacks that got off the hooks eaily when we purposely slacked the line and barbless hooks). But we lost more good sized fish than I can ever recall. They were doing the typical strike short and headshake out the barbless hooks. Usually frustrating, but the fishing was so good we didn't care because we got to stay out there longer enjoying double headers. I started leaving the lower hook free trailing about a 1 1/2" past the herring tail and dropped the rodtip a couple feet on the first strike and that got a much better landing ratio. ...

For you guys going out this week ... In the early morning dim light we were hooking up mostly shallow, around 7 pulls with Deltas; 10 pulls with Deep Six divers. After the bright sun got higher and lots of commotion everywhere the bite went deeper to around 15 to 20 pulls. We kept all big plump cohos - no nookies, but we heard of some on the radio. ...

After hooking so many on herring I put that rod down and started to experiment with my lighter rod. Hey Jeff, I gotta tell ya that the Coyote spoon lost some luster from your hooking a couple on it when we fished bouy 10 Friday. I used the silver and blue one and I just don't understand it not even getting a strike at the same depth the herring were hot?!? I gave up on it and threw out a chrome/chartruse Mag Wart by itself, no lead or diver, and hooked another 3 on that (3rd one broke it off the lighter line). Then I tied on a hot pink hoothchie legged leadhead jig (like used for bottom fish), and casted it forward and out to jig up and down. Two immediate yank downs and the third one hooked up and soon broke the light leader again. Fun hooking them oin different stuff. BTW, we also lost several fish today with the lower hook breaking off - likely from teeth nicks. Then I trolled a twirling large pink worm with a little lead and got one hard yank down on it, but no other hits. I think if we trolled it deeper with a diver it would have done better. When the bite is that hot it's tough to put down what they are hitting (plugcut herring); but this is a great time to experiment with things. ...

We had really good weather and a good sea to enjoy today - and fun guys to fish with. On the way back we stopped and fished bouy 10 for a short while. Committments prevented us from staying long to all get our 3rd fish. It was pretty hot inside today also. We caught a few more fish, Ryan keeping one clipped, and we relaesed a few wild ones and lost some others. Nets were flying everywhere midwday thru the incoming tide there. Just an outstanding day for many hundreds of fishermen! ...

Thanks much John and Ryan. And you too Kevin for letting me drive your 330i Bimmer. Cool car. - Steve

Was out last thursday with pop and WOW was the ocean FLAT! We ran almost WOT out to Buoy 2 and shut her down to bait up and dropped whole herring 20 pulls with an EZ-Diver. Bout five minutes later WHAMMO! Dad had a fish on, got that one to the boat, NATIVE!!! UGH!! Oh well trolling west of two into bout 160 feet of water and Wham bam two on. Both Native. Anyhow we did get out four fishies three silvers about 15-20 lbs and then one who forgot to grow up bout 10 pounds. Like RT's crew we caught a ton on Natives probably bout 15 or so. Hooked one fish 27 pulls down and it took a ton of line and I thought NOOKIE!! But to my dismay it was the biggest darn NATIVE silver I had eer seen probably pushing 25-30 lbs. All in all it was a great time. I fished with a Mirrored? EZ-diver and a green fish flash and dad had a yellow diver and blue fish flash.. Leader and whole herring it was AWESOME!!! Go get them while you can.. Tim

I didn't want to scare any of you away from the hot fishing action down there, so I didn't post this pic earlier. But I decided you have a right to know about the dangers of fishing in the Columbia estuary. ...

This is a pic we took today of the Coast Guard's new camo copter as it lowered a guardsman to pick up a bass fisherman out of the water after flipping his 'Bass Tracker' boat in 2 ft. waves today. The horror!

Fished Saturday at 10. Landed 4 fish, lost another three right at the boat, and many more at 28 pulls. Took a rookie that landed three fish and is hooked for life.
John and Ryan, I saw you guys among the regiment, but wasn't about to travel back in and play bumper boats just to say hello. I couldn't believe the amount of boats out there on Saturday. We put in at Warrenton, but drove over to use Hammonds fish cleaning station. Boy was I glad I didn't put in there. The line to take out at about 3 had to be well over an hour long. It was almost out to the stop sign.
Did the ocean thing on Sunday. Put eight fish in the box in a little over 2 hours. Did something I've never done before. We found ourselves in the middle of some birds, and after a few short strikes we realized
the fish were right on the surface. We all pulled up, released our Deep-Six divers and immediately filled our remaining tags with a fish to release because we brought to many to the boat. What a fun day. Can't wait until next weekend.

Are posts admisable evidence? If so NR Dave, you better change your typo of fishing the closed ocean on Saturday to open ocean Sunday? If there were lots of boats out there fishing also, it was Sunday Dave.

BTW, I think the trick to catching chinook during the hot coho bite is to let out fast and deep before the 'hos grab the bait first.

Saturday? Sunday? Your right, I fixed it. Still a bit worn out. My legs feel like jello after bouncing around for two days.
Thanks for correcting me!

Nice to meet you RT. Had a great time Sunday and you are welcome any time on the boat. Couldn't keep my eyes open monday at my meeting in SanFran. but I dreamed about fish all day.
