Default Integrity of removeable scope mount

My buddy has a hinged scope mount that has spring clips to retain the scope onto the mounts. What is the consensus on the integrity (i.e. does it affect accuracy) of these systems? He was getting larger groups than I would have expected. I did check the stocks to receiver screws and scope to scope mount screws, all seem good but we don't know much about the age and condtion of the barrel. I would say it was shooting about 3" groups at 100 yards with factory Remington Core Lokt ammo (300 WM). I think it's an older Winchester Model 70. My Ruger M77 of the same caliber will often shoot 1-2" groups (and I'm working on getting it tighter!).

Thanks,

I've seen one of these hinged mounted scope a long time ago, but I didn't really get a good look at how it worked. Personally, I wouldn't trust something like that for long range shooting. I just don't think it would have the same integrity as a solid mounted scope. My friend liked it though because he said if his scope got too fogged up, he could flip the scope over and switch to open sights.

I would suspect it might also be causing at least some your grouping issues at 100 yards, but it's hard to say.
