Well it's almost that time again.....1st Season Elk
Well it's that time of year again.
Yep gettin excited. I was a bit bummed about this year's elk season back in Aug & Sept with certain goings on in our hunting area. But we've come to peice with it and formulated new plans, after all the hunt must go on. It's what we do us elk hunters. neither rain, nor sleet & snow, or a little thing like a forest fire shall deter us. Not even a wedding!
Yep, Dad is getting re-married the weekend before the hunt and called to say, "after the wedding you know where the truck, trailer and pack bags are. I'll ride in an join you and your brother a few days late".
SO... I guess that means I get a promotion in the packer dept. A little intimidated but years of doing it over & over has me feeling confident. Time to let the ol'man relax for once. After all, he'll have other things on his mind.
Nothing special for tags...just meat tags. But it doesn't matter, it's not really why we do it year after year. Just a father and his sons doing what they've always done......spend some quality time together in the one place we all love....the mountains.
So good luck to all this season, I know we're gonna have a good time......we always do.

Re: Well it's almost that time again.....1st Season Elk
Good luck over there. There are still plenty of elk in the area I think you are headed to. I have some friends that Archery hunted over there the last week of season. They had little problem getting into ELK!!! I'm sure you'll have a great time and the pack sounds like a lot of fun. I'm guessing where you might be headed and it is a great spot.
Good luck and I look forward to a report,
Gil

Re: Well it's almost that time again.....1st Season Elk
8 days and counting. Clothes & camo washed and ready to pack.
Sharpened knives & the hatchet last night. Going through the hunt pack and preparing bed roll tonight.
Note to self:
Pick up new LED head lamp, extra AA, replace dry kool-aid & power bars in pack, pickup whiskey, smokes and a couple fresh lighters.
Remember collapsible waterjug brother asked about.
Hummm, Pillow....don't forget pillow.
- Tag, rifle, ammo....ok I'm good to go.
- opps, riding slicker....might need that.
....ok NOW I'm good to go.

Dale, Ha, ha...another advantage to shooting a SS Browning...HUH?
Lloyd, brother has given me orders to lighten up my gear a bit. He laughs every year when I unroll my bed roll and inside there 2 sleeping bags, an air mattress, a pillow, my bi-pod & sling, a carton of smokes, 2 sets of hydro fleece, my .45 & gun belt, and an extra pair of boots w/ a 5th of hooch stuck in each boot.
Then I walk over and toss him HIS set of saddle bags! (which about knock him over)

Re: Well it's almost that time again.....1st Season Elk
I'm pumped! We are headed to the Starkey unit next week.
I've got everything about 1/2 packed right now.
Can't wait to smell that campfire and get back to elk country.
I hope my group has the firewood covered by the time I get there.

Re: Well it's almost that time again.....1st Season Elk
I've been getting things ready for months now, mainly myself!!! Been hitting the stair climber, stationary bike and tread mill very heavy as of late. Everything else is falling into place. We won't leave untill tuesday afternoon. It only takes us a little over an hour and we will be in hunters heaven. Good luck to all of you!!!
