Shimano Torsa..... Lever Drag, nice reels. I have one and they are awesome. They have drag sets that can be changed depending on what king of fishing you are doing.

Re: which reels to wish for...
I've got 5 Avets and counting. Penn Torque, I remember reading something about them on Charkbait and they review was pretty favorable. I just like lever drag reels so much better that I'll stick with the Avets for now

I'm going to get a couple of Quantum Arubas this winter. I've been really happy with the Quantum PT line.

Bragger.....
Some of us only have 10 or so
The JX or LX are great reels for everything from big lings to 'buts and albies The MX series can handle albies with ease also Oh and the two speeds may not be necessary, but are sure nice

I have one Hoo-x in the mix of some EX, LX and SX models.... it's a nice reel for sure! I do find the EX more comfortable... big fan of the handle on that model. Who am I kidding.... I love them all!!!

rooster, only 23! You need more of em' my friend!
Accurates would get my vote too. And the torsa 30 is a sweet reel.
Don't forget a few Diawa electrics for next seasons halibut opener.
It's all only money, and we can all dream for the big money gear, right?

Re: which reels to wish for...
I've got the Hx (along with the ex and mx)and it's pretty fast. not sure you will need it's speed for anything up here. jx or lx cost less and will get the job done.
the diawa saltist 50 is a nice star drag. you can chose what speed you want. the high speed version is about as fast as the Hx. I also own the penn baja special.all three are close to the same size. my first choice would be the avet(nice to have the low gear just incase) but the diawa is a close second, the baja special just isn't worth the $ compared to the saltist. I'm a made in america kind of guy and it was pretty hard for me buy the korean made diawa, but Keta said it was a good reel so I went with.

I can see I don't belong in this conversation.
I've got Penn 330GTi's (4 of 'em), a couple Penn Squdders, and an Avet I can't wait to sell. Two of my Penn's are three years old ($90) and I've had them reconditioned once for $45.
Some guys just have no class.

Re: which reels to wish for...
I used to think it was personal preferance until my grandson went on halibut trip. He is 9 , and tried to reelup hali on penn 330, penn 320 and required someone holding rod. Put him on my avet lx 2speed on low and watched him catch 5 fish ( one was 60 lbs) in about 3 hours. Really stood out! Thanks everyone on this site for help on what to buy!!!!

Someone already mentioned the HX it is a nice reel, but at $409, $20 more gets you a EX Pro 30 Narrow. Up here in the NW, I've not seen a need for a 5:1 gear ratio and fished a 6:1 and didn't care for that at all. Some will say that the pro 30 is way too much reel, but I sure like mine for the species you list - short of an electric it make butt fishing pretty sweet, big lings from on deep and it just works. Big albies on the troll - now you can really but the wood to um and get them turned back at the spread while still doing 3-4kts

Re: which reels to wish for...
I'm wishin for Alan's arsonal; I could send my kid to college for what that group costs.
I have a Avet Pro 30N and feel it is too heavy to railfish all day for halibut. The HX is next on my list, being lighter and more friendly on my wimpy arms. I think the LX and the HX and the 30Narrow are all awesome reels for trolling tuna.
I have found that for halibut fishing I loose too many fish using the low speed on the two speed reels. Has anyone else noticed this? It's like the low speed is too slow or something. The low speed is great for bait checks; it just takes a little longer to get it to the surface. I use a single hook most of the time fishing bait for halibut which could be part of the problem with losing fish.

Never had that problem..... but I use circle hooks, and I never loose a fish regardless of the reel. J-hooks are more likely to loose a fish.

Ok here goes. I recognise some folks can spend huge amounts on the best of everything. I spend top money on safety equipment and maintenance. Altho I am loaded with the standard gear for salmon and bottom fish I need to "upgrade" and add 3 rod & reel combos for Tuna. (My fault for moving further to the dark side this year)... $550+ per combo is outta the question...so...for all the more frugal people, are there any reliable setups for <$250? I don't mind rebuilding a decent reel every coupla years, especially since I'm capable of dropping things overboard, breaking tips in doors and various other idiotic moves.

I started out with Penn 113's and 114's. Still have them and they worked okay. You most likely would do just fine with the cheaper penn 320 or 321's IMHO. They work perfectly on these albies and don't cost to much either. Pair that with a 7' brute Stick from Joes at $34.00 bucks and you have a pretty darn fun setup to fish with for less than $100 not including line. Or you could step up a little on the reel and go the 330 penn but I think the 320s work just fine.
My collection of reels
6 Avets of assorted sizes.
1 Newell
1 TLD 30 2 speed
4 penn 113 and 114
Other assorted Penn and other brand reels.
Rods are all cheap. Have'nt paid more than 50 bucks for a rod. Ugly sticks, beef sticks, Brute sticks......whatever is on sale until I feel or have found a better way to stow rods on the boat without screwing them up. Plus this year Is I never broke one.
No electrics yet but hopefully by next season.
Alan, that is an impressive, expensive collection my friends. Trade ya and I'll even throw in $100 bill. Deal?

I have a Diawa SGH(?) 50 it is 4 years old now and has caught numerous Halibut and TUNA
It holds 450 yards of 50lb braid and I have never had and issues with it
No trouble with drags NOTHING
It matches up to an Ugly stick (The Yellow one) really well
Reel $139
Line $45
Rod $50-60
You can not go wrong with this setup for the $$$$

Re: which reels to wish for...
Well-said Catch and Eat. Here is my reel collection
2 Penn 114H
1 Penn 113H
1 Penn 113
1 Penn 500 Jigmaster
1 Penn 140 Squidder
1 Newell 322
1 Newell 338
2 Diawa SL20SH
All are at least 15 years old, and several of the Penns are 30 years old. I've replaced drag washers, gear bridges, pinion gears and anti-reverse dogs as necessary.
We're talking about lil' 25# tuna here, not big-game. And we're talking about the rough-and-tumble of small boats, in my case a surf-launched PC dory. I neither have the money for for prestige reels, nor I am convinced they catch more fish.

A Penn 500 jigmaster would be a good low cost lo-tech replacement for the 320 as a live bait reel. As another SD wrote:"Penn Jigmasters have caught more tuna(albacore) than all the other reels combined".

Thanks to all for the advice. Looks like I'll be picking up some penn reels and three 7' MH/H rods. I already have 2 Daiwa sealines so 3 + 2 + 2 handlines and I've got as many out as I can get without outriggers...hmmm outriggers??

Re: which reels to wish for...
not afilliated with accurate, progear, calstar or any other rod or reel company. calstar would be fun, but i already have a full set. looks like i will be joining the staff at blackwater. they're they guys that make spectra and fluoro. i actually prefer the berkeley high test in the 30, 40, and 50# weights because i can use a 50% drag setting.
but particularly regarding reels, i'm not afilliated !

Re: which reels to wish for...
I'm with ya, Tinman. Somehow I still manage to stumble around out there and land a fish or two. My biggest halibut, 85lbs, came on a Penn 209. He made three runs back to the bottom and I still got him. The reel still works too, and I haven't sent it in for a tune-up. It's about 13 years old.
I've got a couple Calstar's I bought as blanks from Mark Mc, but everything else is Uglystik's.
I don't draw much of a crowd at the TA meetings though....
PS. Having said that, I should also say I have no beef with quality. You ought to see my optics for hunting.

Could it be that your Tuna clothes now smell more of Horse than Tuna.

Re: which reels to wish for...
I have 12 of the Daiwa Saltist Reels sitting on their 7' Medium action Saltiga Rods. Very pretty set ups and the reels are smoooooth!
For swimbaits I have 4 Accurate 270's, 2 Accurate 870's and 4 Daiwa Luna 300's. All great reels. The Luna's are the best casters, and the Accurates are great on the troll. The Accurates also cast well, but I keep having people monkey around with the cast control and then they don't cast so well!
For running larger gear I have 2 Daiwa Sealine Tournament 30's and 2 Penn 50 VSW's on Penn Roller Rods.
All in all, way to much Tuna Gear, and as someone else said, I sure hope my wife doesn't sell this stuff for what I said it cost when I die!!!

Re: which reels to wish for...
I use My Left & My Right and for the price there is nothing better, they have never let me down and there is nothing like feeling them on your finger tips. Best Tuna Reel Made in My Book LOL! I do use a penn GTI 345 on occasion and they have been a great reel for the money.

I'd be happy with a couple of new Penn 113HN Baja Specials to hang on my CalStar 6465s.

Reels to wish for:
Well I have one in particular,
It's that little Accurate twin spin 12 spinning reel. That reel would make me go "O".
Darn, I have to wait for my birthday NEXT YEAR

Re: which reels to wish for...
I have used many rods but really love the Calstar rods...
Am going to use the 665 two speed and the twin 30 for upcomming sturgeon trip...some of these Fraser river beasts go 11 feet long....my biggest was only 6 1/2 feet and 275 pounds..still a lot in a moving river situation..

I'm a real Penn fan, but I must have gotten a Penn Torque lemon.
- Used it about 4 times before it froze up.
- Had it worked on and found no lubrication in the reel at all.
- Most of the moving parts are metal to metal such as the clicker lever, the spool release lever, etc. Lots of wear and corrosion.
I've had great luck with the Avets, and the Penn 16SVX.
