Trolling Lures for tout
Ok so at hagg lake i know wedding rings work for trout and so do most spinners, but what i want to know is what other lures or rigs work, such as plugs, are there any special techniqes that work good and or what type of trolling rigs or flashers work well and and what speeds. I also heard that the fish flash( a solo trolling flasher made to attract fish but not drag the line any more) just came out with a mini one, does anyone have experience with these and know they will work for rainbows.

Re: Trolling Lures for tout
I've never fished Hagg Lake, but in general, I've had good success trolling small flatfish, especially the frog pattern for larger trout. Other good lures to use are Triple Teasers in black or frog color. Needlefish are also good. In the evening during the summer, I'll flat line these behind the boat about a hundred feet back, and troll very slowly in an S pattern. The slower the better. Often, hits come on the curves as the lure either slows down and drops or speeds up and rises, triggering a strike. During the morning this also works. Also during the morning or the afternoon, trolling deep with a small plug or a trolling spoon behind a dodger works well.
Generally, the brigher color and flashier lures will attract smaller trout. The bigger trout are after a hefty meal, and the more natural patterns and colors will tend to produce fewer but bigger fish. Sometimes for bigger trout, you want to avoid anything flashy altogether. You really have to experiment to see what they're hitting that day. A depth finder helps. If you don't have a downrigger, try using a Deep Six diving sinker. Get the smallest one they make. It will get your lure down deep quickly, and has a release so it quits planing down when a fish hits. You'll have to adjust the release. Again, the slower you troll, the better, but it helps to occassionally speed up and slow down, and vary your route.
Another factor to consider during bright sunlight is to troll away from the sun if possible. The light of the sun will make it difficult for the fish to see your lure while following it if you're trolling towards the sun. If you can't troll away from the sun, at least zig-zag so you're presenting your lure as little as possible towards the sun.

Rapalas and Rebels work too. I like J Plugs for Macks. If you're using downriggers put a dodger or some other attractor on the ball and fish your gear behind it, this way you can use a lighter rod and the fish aren't fighting your gear. We started trolling Coyote Spoons on Klamath Lake last year and they were working well.

Re: Trolling Lures for tout
Don't underestimate the appetite of a bow. I caught a 18" rainbow on a J13 Rapala... 18" fish chased down a 10" plug. Heck I thought I was getting a brown and here comes Mr. Bow

Lil' wigglers work great. I like the all chrome with a black stripe down the back.

Gus Where did you find those ten inch long J13s? Mine are only 5.25 inches. Something that size should work well on browns.

As Cosmic Lazy Susan says...F4 Flatfish, experiment with colors. Pull it alongside the boat to make sure it runs true, if not adjust it. Troll slow enough to make the rod tip slowly undulate, not a rapid vibration. Try em with and without a little weight up the line a couple feet.

You might be surprised how many and large fish, trolling a black woolly bugger can produce.

Try a Super duper lure. They look like a U shaped lure. They are deadly trolled behind flashers or by themselves.

I have to go to a #70 Hot Shot behind a Ford Fender. That one was taught to me about ten years ago and I've never looked back--ferocious strikes.

Flat Fish, size #4 or #5 trolled with a fly rod with sinking line, You'll never go back to a spinning rod if you use that combo. They really slam it!

Black with orange spots F5 flatlined at a slow throb 40-50 feet back along weed edges of high desert lakes and rezs in early spring and late fall. I could tell you stories...

Re: Trolling Lures for tout
Try some of the small cowbell trolling rigs. We use the two color units, trail a worm back 12-18". We row vs motor, easier to rate speed and I think the rise fall you get with each stroke works pretty well. We like the area close to the dam and along the low wake boeys. We don't normally catch huge trout, but can take a limit for 2 on most days and do it fairly quickly.

Re: Trolling Lures for tout
In the summer time if there are chubs or minnow fish in the lake, shad raps work great. I flat line them behind the boat going Mach 1 (ok not that fast but the boat is moving at the pace of someone walking very fast or jogging) right before dark. I have caught some monstors doing this and they hit it hard so make sure you have a good rod and check your knots...

Re: Trolling Lures for tout
Try a small willow leaf lake troll (similar to ford fender but small blades) with a 3" Rapala-black and silver finish. We've caught trout, kokanee and small mouth bass to the point of boredom on that lake with this rig.
Best success was on the east side of the lake trolling in front of the bays as well as the shallow north end.
Inside the bays you can cast spinners and plugs and knock the heck out of the small mouth. Bait fishing will also produce in the bays if you are getting boat but and your kids have ants in their pants.
I have also heard, but not successfully fished for lunkers in this lake by the dam running very deep.

Re: Trolling Lures for tout
I`ve done really good on 1/16 size rooster tails...black/silver speck body with a silver blade....root beer with brass speck body with a brass blade....bright yellow body with a silver blade also a f4 in a frog color pattern, all these slooooow trolled tied direct to a small snap swivel using 8lb. test. At ollalie lake I`ve done really well using the "tiny" lake troll from luhr jensen with about an 18" leader to a size 6 baitholder hook with a nightcrawler on...all on 8lb. test.
