East side Duck Opener
Saturday morning was a clear day in NE Oregon. I went duck hunting with my friend and one of my son's at a local pond. By the time we hit shooting light, we had 11 decoys floating in the water and were waiting for the local ducks to come on in. They came in intervals...about 20 minutes apart and evidently hadn't seen many decoys before because each flock that came in set their wings and came right at us. In total, we had about a dozen birds come in and we ended up with 6...mainly teal and mallards. They quit flying about an hour after daylight.
Chester, my golden retreiver, did a great job getting the birds. This was his first crack at duck hunting. He got tangled up in the decoy string going after the first couple we knocked down...but he steered clear of them after that.
Good fun...Should be better when it gets colder and more ducks come in.

Re: East side Duck Opener
Just what I was hoping would greet me this morning... a duck report.
Looks, and sounds, like you had a good time. That looks like one happy kiddo.
Thanks for the report!

Ahhh, There we are,
First real duck report of the season and with a great photo of a tired and happy dog, and a youngster that is all grins!
That what I like to see.
Nice work.

Re: East side Duck Opener
Had a great time down at Summer Lake and shot a few birds too. Hunted with some fellow ifishers, Waterfowler101, FeatherBusterOSU, greenheadgunner, BrotherWolf, and a few ifish lurkers. Got my first Spec goose ever, my first Canvasback (hen dang it) and just had a great time with a group of fun guys. I am sure one of the fellas will fill in there rest of the story with some color...(silver & blue mostly)...hehehe.

Re: East side Duck Opener
Kurt,
I personally didn't take any photos as there were a few other cameras there snapping away. Hopefully one of the other guys will post up a few.

Re: East side Duck Opener
Got in my first trip ever to Summer Lake and had a great time. When it got light enough to finally see, I wasn't in the spot I thought I was headed to, but it turned out pretty good. Ended up killing 4 birds (2 gadwall, 1 widgeon, and 1 spooney) and could have easily had a few more had I better known the drill. Silly me, for the first couple hours I was waiting on birds actually coming into the dozen decoys I had set out and passing on what would later prove to be completely acceptable shots. I didn't join the mile high club which seemed prevalent with at least one group around me but did learn passing shots are acceptable.
All in all a fun time and a place I will certainly visit again. BrotherWolf, it was nice chatting with you for a few minutes in the afternoon. Hope the rest of the weekend went well.

Re: East side Duck Opener
Lonnie,
It has been fun hunting with you both times and you have been pretty good luck I have to say. It must be the license plate on your rig? Ya when you hit that Canvasback on the way down...and we got snowed on...man I will always remember that! I just hope you forget that mallard I nailed before you could get a shot off.

Re: East side Duck Opener
Way to go guys. I was thinking of ya'll while I was creeping around the coast range for a certain horned critter.
Congrats Jim on the speck & can!
Matt, way to get the boys out! I'm going to take a guess and say I drive by this pond all the time...just past Dorteys (sp)?
Don't rule out walking the creek...man did we whack a pile of ducks every year walking the creeks and irrigation ditches.
Come on you guys....lets see those pics!!!!!
