Default Ochoco hunters- need help for youth hunter

My son drew a youth cow hunt for the Ochoco's this year.
Due to family issues I was unable to do any scouting before the season (it starts this Saturday)

If there are any archery or deer hunters that hunted this unit this year have any locations on where to look, it would be appreciated.

I've contacted the biologists, and will be calling a relative that lives in Prinville this week to see if he has any info for us. I hunted deer in this unit twice (Spanish Peak years ago) and usually hunt Chesnimus for elk.

I understand if people don't want to give out info. If you do, that would be greatly appreciated. I won't be hunting the bull season there and don't know anyone that has a tag for it this year. So the info is not intended for anyone else but my son. I'm praying that I can at least get him into some animals.

Thanks
Kelly

Kelly,

I will be at the Allen Creek Horse camp on Friday. That's on the 22 road at the north end of Big Summit Prairie. We hunted there last year and my daughter go her first elk on opening day. !st hunt for her even. It was pretty cool. Any way, I might be able to help you find a place to start.

Thanks Rob,
We're leaving Friday morning to head out there. If we can find a campsite quick enough, I'll try to drive over and find you.
We're planning on camping near Little summit prairie or Cottonwood camp. A friend of mine said that they are logging at Cottonwood, so I'm not usre if we'll go there.

Look for the camp with a couple of wall tents and a small black cargo trailer. I will be out cutting wood part of the day, but will be in and out. Good Luck, it's a great hunt.

Just got back from Deer hunting, wasn't very good, anyway seen a lot of Elk on the edge of Peterson Lava towards Mitchell, and some Lower around Big Summit, hit the big canyons then have been push pretty hard with Bow and Rifle hunters, Lots of Luck if I knew of a particular Herd would tell you am starting on my Grandsons first hunt, haven't put in for Youth Tags yet going to try Cascade this year and wait till he's really got his hunting down some. Have a good hunt and with this Mentor Program I think we will see more youth hunters....................Ray

Kelly, logging and elk go together like roosters and a lab.

I wouldn't brush off that area too quickly. If you get there earlier enough, ask some of the loggers if they've seen any. Also try the section directly across the road from Cottonwood Campground. They were in there all bow season last year.

Thanks for the info everyone. Been packing all day. Hope I haven't missed anything.

Hope we get some good hunting weather. I have time off from work for the whole season, but "im not sure if my son is up to staying out there that long.
We'll see.
