Default O. K. Tell Me Tell Me. Newport Kings

I seen so many really big kings while I was in Newport during Halbut days coming off the chaters. Where are they catching them. How are they catching them. I'm heading that way this week and would like to hurt one or two of them.

Fished out of Newport yesterday. It was a beautiful day on the ocean and we came back with three Chinook in the box. There are still a lot of silvers around and we released several even fishing deep. Also shook three more Chinook that were undersize. All the action was just inside the north
"rockpile". There is a large troll fleet working there and we saw several charters as well. The charters we saw near us were mooching and caught quite a number of fish while we were close enough to see what they were doing. I'd say it was definitely worth the trip!

I don't have exact numbers for you but effort was skattered around from 44degrees 35 to 38 minutes north by 124 degrees 23 minutes West. I was fishing with a friend and didn't pay to much attention to co-ordinates but did look at the chart as he was plotting our position throughout the day. Just look for the troll fleet working that area for the best area when you get on the grounds. Good luck!

dock rat,

This is my first year out and I am still trying to purposely catch a King. I caught 1 20 lb'er on the last full weekend of coho season on my diver/dodger/hoochie. Since then, I have been out 4 days and have struck out. We fished 2 days out of Newport, and went to Winchester Bay this weekend. I obviously need some help.

First, how is "mooching" done?

Next, do you troll a certain depth, or mark fish with the finder, then go for that depth? (I have downriggers and could get to 160 or 170 with my current wire)

Should I be pulling a herring behind a dodger? Since my hoochie gave me my one and only King, I have subbornly stuck with it.

And lastly, when do the Kings pile up in front of Waldport and Newport to make their run?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi M.S.
Mooching is a piece of cake. Get a 5 to 8 oz banana sinker and 30 lb leader. you need to plug cut your herring. I recommend getting a jig to do this then its the easiest. You can also experiment with plug cutting. Look for a slow roll instead of the faster roll for silvers. Take your rod I like to use 8 to 9 footers Medium Heavy rods with 25 to 30 lb test line for these big guys. go to the bottom and start working the depths varying it. On the rock pile I recommend staying within 60' of the bottom I may be off with this.

Your down riggers should work also. Get them as deep as you can and troll about 2 mph. The rockpile is at least 150' deep so you may not have enough cable to get down deep enough.

I was bottomfishing out of Newport Sunday and I saw many nice chinook come of the charter boats and a few of the regular guys' boats. The charter caught them mooching but I don't know where exactly. The silvers were all over the place and many were hooked on the retrieve of our bottomfish gear. One of the fish on the charter was 41#. I wish I would have done that, but 6 hours of blowing chunks was more than enough for me.......
