Re: Braided Line, VS Monofilament
It's Saturday, it's late. Here's what I have to offer.
I have tried most all of the "braided" lines out there, and have had nothing but good luck and sucess with most of them. I've found the smaller diameter lines work the best for me for a variety of reasons. (less weight required, sensitivity, no stretch, etc...)
I've read and head that you must use a palomar or similar knot with these lines, but I've always used a regular double clinch knot with no problems. In fact I just filled up one of my reels today with a very fine 50# braided line and will feel comfortable using it for the next 3 years. I also cut at least 6" to 1 foot off my main line after each fish on that reel.
I don't set the hook near as hard with a braided line as I do with a monofillament line. Since there's little to no stretch in braided lines, you can tear the lure or bait right out or the fishes mouth without realizing it. If you talk to anybody who has spent any time watching upriver brights and steelhead go through the ladder on a consistent basis, they will tell you that they see a LOT of lures and fish with partially torn off jaws from fishermen stetting the hook too hard or playing it too tight.
While these fish will most likely survive and make it upstream to spawn (or be gillnetted for who's benefit?), at least you had a shot at them
Hope this helps.
