Default Now..need help on tackle needed

Thanks everyone for the suggestions on a rod and reel. I am now not sure what tackle I need to buy. It's a little confusing to me. Again, I bow down to your wisdom and beg you for your suggestions

I'll be taking to the water at Buoy 10 on the 18th. I'm trying to be prepared as possible.

I was at Fisherman's Marine yesterday. They have pretty helpful people in there. They also have examples of how rods should be rigged up so you get a good Visual. To me thats a big help being able to see how there done. They also have Divers and Flashers or Dodgers on sale now.

jojo...are you making your first trip to buoy10? Sounds like you are are new to the game. If you are not an experienced boater i would seek some advice regarding this fishery as it can be extremely dangerous to your health. The info you have received regarding equipment is good sound advice. If you are going with someone who knows the area then you are ok. If you are not then please get someone to go with you that can show you the ropes because it is not a place for the novice to be. Cagey.

Thanks for the replies. I am new to Buoy 10; however, I will be going with friends! Michael? You reading this?

Anyway, the last time I fished for Salmon was on the Rogue River when I was a teenager [~20 years ago]. My parents would take me there for a week of fishing off the banks. It was great! Growing up in North Bend/Coos Bay I also had plenty of opportunities to be out in the boat with my Dad fishing for a variety of fish...including a few salmon

JOJO do your self a favor. Use 30 lb leader at bouy ten and set your drag light. and hold on. There are some big boys floating around there. Save one for me.

JoJo if you want to keep it simple, just get a delta diver and some salmon leaders. The leader size doesn't make any difference 15, 20 or 30#s. I have enver seen salmon be shy of leaders. Then you get some anchovies or herring and start fishing! You don't even have to cut plug them. I have never used flashers or dodgers and I usually limit fairly quickly. OK. I'm getting close. I have a variety of divers in my arsenal now and have also picked up a number of leadered [40Lb test] hook sets. What about flashers? I bought one just because I like tackle [kind of like buying power tools ]; however, I haven't heard a lot of discussion about using them. I bought a Fish Flash by Big Al's tackle company. Thought it looked cool.

The variety of flashers is enormous. Any hints on what is working well for people out there?

Fish Flash is a nice flasher and is what I use most of the time. Those are great flashers as the really don't drag on your line. Word of advice though attach them directly to your diver it eliminates extra knots and works really well... Good luck.. Tim

Used a large red/silver fish flash flasher hooked directly to the delta diver with a duolock snap this weekend with good results. Tried the green/silver, silver/silver and red/silver did the best, caught chinook and silvers with this combo. I'm also a fan of heavy leaders, I like 40 pound test. Use 7 foot leaders, bead chain in the middle for chinook and 4 to 5 for silvers. I also like solid tied leaders, not slip. I used to use the slip tied since they are easier to rig a bait for good spinning action. Except when fish broke off, it was usually on the slip tied, figured the upper hook slid down next to the lower hook binding the leader. The solids are easy to tie, except you have to match the distance between hooks to the bait so you'll get a proper roll. This weekend I tied apx. 4 inches between upper and lower hook eye for whole and cut baits. Whole herring or cut plug both work. The fresh herring is better fished whole not cut, bait is soft and easily breaks down quickly if you cut fresh bait. Use frozen for cut plug. I also like whole anchovies, silvers love them.

For divers, I mentioned I use delta's. But to tell you the truth, after this weekend I'm thinking of switching back to deep six. I can release a deep six to check bait but you can't on a delta. I figure if I'm using a fish flash below the diver anyway, diver color won't matter. Just another something to ponder.

Best of luck and let us know how you do,

Gregg
