How to land a seal
I fished out of Hammond yesterday great weather and the bit wasn't bad during outgoing. Only flaw was Mr Seal, hooked a fish started to bring him in all of a sudden line started pealing like crazy. Told my partner this must be a huge nookie about that time Mr Seal surfaces with my fish in his mouth that began a merry chase around the bay Mr Seal kicked my butt had to cut the line and let him win. Anyone found a technic that makes Mr Seal let go short of a bullet in the head?

Re: How to land a seal
Tell me that is not a seal on there. That has got to be illegal. Tell that guy that I think he is an *** for not just cutting his line.

Re: How to land a seal
I'v heard that the best thing to do in this case is to tie about 8-10 oz onto your line and then cut it leaving about 15-20 ft. Seems the seals like dragging that weight around before they drown.

Hey Texan,
Nah. BOE is my hero. Could have been 500 pounds of a bad breath, salmon eating, but so cute seal. BOE, when we going to Alaska to club the pups? (OK maybe this is too far, grin)

Re: How to land a seal
I hate them seals, too. I am sure BOE seal was already dead when he found it, Cool Texan. But, be careful what you do out there with those seals. I've been told by a few people that the fine for harassing/killing one of them is $10,000. Does anybody know if this is true? That's a hell of a fine to pay for such a petty crime. Re: How to land a seal
OK, I will talk,
I like to use a muddler minnow since the seals tend to chase fish better than bugs. This particular little fellow put up quite a fight. I was stripped down to my backing with only a few wraps left when I put the brakes on him. I was afraid my 9 foot 5wt wasnt going to have enough back bone to put the brakes on this little guy. The floating line worked well with a weighted tippet. We used the gaff hook after he chewed the net up This one was a little dark, but he smoked up just fine. Usually I only keep the ones at are chrome bright.
CT - Chill out, I am just messing with you.

Re: How to land a seal
BOE, quite recycling that tired seal photo. Poor little guy died a cruel death in that crab pot of yours white trying to get at that bait of yours.
As far as landing a seal, Harpons work really well. You just tie the little fellers off on the rear cleat and drown 'em real good like.

Re: How to land a seal
The British Columbia Regulations recommend piloting your boat over the top of the seal and keeping it there until the seal surfaces. When the seal surfaces they recommend throwing weights etc. at it until it lets go of the salmon.
I am not sure how you would keep the boat over the top of the seal. I am also not sure that you wouldn't get a ticket for harrassing a sea mammal, here in the states, if you were caught throwing stuff at a seal. Maybe you could get away with a wrist rocket.
The last time I had it happen to me, I had a sea lion come up with my chinook in its mouth about four feet behind the boat. He just stared at me for about twenty seconds daring me to do something. Then he ripped it off and submerged. It's a good thing I didn't have a gun. I am not sure that the judge would have believed my temporary insanity plea. I was so mad. I was beyond mad.
I have often fantasized about having an exploding herring. If a seal grabs your salmon, you just push your remote control and smile as his head disappears. I think maybe that's what Bait O' Eggs used.
