Herring questions

OK, I admit I don't know much about herring, so help me understand.
1) Where do the herring sold as bait come from?
2) Why have there been shortages over the last year?
3) Why can I buy blue and purple label herring at the coast, but in the Portland area I'm told that they've all been sent to Alaska?
4) Why are there no large, fresh herring - only frozen?

Hi Pete,

Just to let you know that we have tons of fresh herring. Another fresh batch of blues and purple will be here tomorrow morning.

We get our fresh herring from Puget Sound.

There is a shortage of herring I hear. But I have GREAT connections this year and I can get herring 7 days a week.

Alot of the herring is sent to Alaska and California to the BIG buyers, us little guys are dead last. But I have some of the finest herring on the west coast right NOW!

Are there any purple or blues in the portland area? yesterday the biggest at Fisherman's Delta park were red and Fisherman's O'city were green. I will buy some in Tillamook, but kind of wanted to get some purple cut-plugs in my special brine fri. night.
