Default waders?

Are the breathables durable? Also, I was told that in the winter time a pair of thermals under them that your good to go?

Damp,

Really depends on which brand you go with. I would save my cash up until I could afford the guide weights from Cabelas, or preferably, the Simms Guide model. They are worth every penny. Tough as nails and yes, if you layer correctly during winter, they are fine to use. I use mine year around. They are so much less constricting than the neos.

I have to concur on the breathable bit. For extreme cold 5 mil neoprenes are probably the best route but how often does it stay really cold for a long time around here? For winter last year a layer of polypropelene underwear and a layer of 200 weight polar fleece did the trick. I was much warmer (due to the fact that I was dry) than I ever was in my 3 mil neoprene waders.
Also, I would say don't skimp. I have a pair from patagonia that are great. LL Bean has a nice wader as does Orvis along with the previously mentioned Simms.
