cowlitz bank access
hey gang! the WDFW just upped the daily limit on the cowlitz!
and i quote: "Action: Beginning Saturday, Aug. 4, bank anglers on the Cowlitz River from Mill Creek upstream to the deadline below the barrier dam will be able to keep chinook as part of their salmon daily limit. The daily limit is 6 salmon, no more than 2 of which can be adults. Any chinook, with or without and adipose fins intact, may be retained. Wild coho and all chum must be released."
anyone got any good bank access spots up that way?

Re: cowlitz bank access
amp,
That area is located right at the Barrier Dam access, and you can drive right up to the river there. Expect a crowd, though........

Re: cowlitz bank access
Ampersat,
I also read that release on the WDFW site. I believe the reason for the action was more of a PR gesture than anything else. Spring chinook are the target fish mentioned, and there are very few, if any, left in the Cowlitz now. The ones that are left are dark and pretty much worthless. I believe it also stated that chinook will close at the end of August. I don't think there will be a targeted fishery on the fall chinook this year, but that may change if they get alot of fish back. Silvers will take center stage here in a few weeks, and the crowds will descend on the barrier dam for the 6 fish limit.

Re: cowlitz bank access
ampersat,
Your not fishing trout on the Sandy are you? The Sandy and Clackamas and most all other west side streams with salmon and steelhead in them are closed to the taking of trout. I don't know if your keeping them but on a past post you mentioned smoking trout.

Re: cowlitz bank access
nope, just little stockers out of the lakes. gives me a chance to take the canoe out. they're pretty stupid so getting five of them doesn't take very long.

www.friendsofthecowlitz.com
-- your source for information on the Cowlitz. If it's not posted, it can be found. OH yes, it can be found...muh ha ha ha ha ha
I've got the news release posted on the front page about the springers. Also have the numbers of fish, under the fishing reports link. I think they only recovered 12 adult springers last week, so them opening it up now is pretty much a fruitless effort to make them look good since the Cowlitz "did" have a season for the retainment of springers this year

Re: cowlitz bank access
Concerning the opening for fall chinook in the bubble at the mouth of the lewis this year, does anybody know if this is the only part open or is the north fork open to the retention of fall chinook this year, too. If it is, why would they suddenly open it this year if these fish are ESA listed?

KB - www.wa.gov
it has an agency index to find the WDFW's site with that information. Regs. are at that site as well. They are usually pretty good with a fast reply for information concerning laws, so either a phone call or email should answer your question.

Re: cowlitz bank access
Thank's 'Yall. Didn't find anything about it on WDFW's site, course I didn't look too hard. I'll try emailing them, though. Come to think of it, I have more than one question for them now. Hope I don't swamp 'em.
