Default Dechutes Info

I have a family member coming into town tomorrow and I REALLY want him to catch a fish. I keep hearing about wading out to an island at the mouth of the dechutes, and then throwing spinners. Do you need to have a set of neoprenes, or would hipwaders be sufficient? Is the island right at the mouth, or is it up river at all? Thanks for the help!!

It's near the mouth by the state park. You probably need neaprines or a swim suit. If you use a floating device to get out there you may need a boaters pass.
Check the weatehr forecast, it may be pretty windy up there.

Casting plugs can be good too.

I've fished it in shorts and sandals, you'll sweat to death in waders. Use #4 vibrax in silver&chart or blue in the morning, when the sun hits the water switch to all brass.

Just above the Island there is a bit of a bar which splits into several channels. Lots of tube fishers drifting into that spot, however you can wade from the Island up to the bar.

I have seen several fish caught in that area, in the last few weeks.

There is always someone there, when they leave someone else takes their place. So you may have to wait your turn but it is worth it.

Watch out for snakes, I saw 4 last time I was there, one baby rattler in the water!! First time I've ever seen that.

Good luck
