Board EXPLOSION!
Help! I'm running away! Ifish is too big!
There are too many people here so some of you have to leave!
Just kidding.
The server load on ifish has become increasingly greater. At 9:53 this morning, the board was not working. Too much traffic. It usually runs on server load of less than one but it was up to 34 this morning! Lots of people trying to access.
This is good news and bad news for me!
I have had to take away a few options, such as "Search all boards" to slow things down a bit. When you do searches now, you need to search a particular board. Otherwise it has to read through zillions of messages and ties things up searching for one thing.
The server needs more RAM, and I may upgrade to a dedicated server soon.
Code red may have had something to do with it also, as my server has been probed 7,500 times with this virus since Aug 1st. It is protected from infection, but it still probes to look for a way in.
Just hang in there with me when the board is slow, and these decisions and fixes will be made soon.
Thanks, and I WAS just kidding about going away! Please don't!
Great community of people here, and I enjoy what all you have put into it.
Everyone thanks me for the board. It's not me! It's you!

Re: Board EXPLOSION!
I haven't noticed any slowdown of ifish. And that whole Code Red thing probably isn't affecting your server load if you are properly protected. What will happen is an infected server will try to probe your machine by trying to open a connection, but if it doesn't work then it gives up and moves on. So if you've only been hit 7000 times, then its probably not even noticable.
By the way, I run my own email server and I have been probed about 400 times already. And its not a popular server or anything, the only people who use it are me and my family.

Re: Board EXPLOSION!
Something I have thought about though, if more people are involved, would it still have a community feel to it? I think community is what makes ifish special. People know one another.
I like knowing most everyone, and how would we keep track of everyone if EVERYONE joins up?
Not that I don't want ifish to be open to everyone, but as it is, I have a hard time reading it all!
Don't you?

Re: Board EXPLOSION!
How about an "anti lurker" feature? At least 5 posts a month or BAMMO! auto membership termination?

Could have alot to do with the virus. The network at work has been snail slow this week and the t-1 connection is more like a slow dialup. Might be best to observe things a few days before raising the white flag and hiding on the river . BTW have you been over fishing the Wilson for summers???
