Re: buoy 10 help

We too will be there on Thursday. We fish Buoy 10 with a Delta Diver, green typically, approximately 5-6ft leader of 30-40# test(trust me you need it-we use 40#:the fish aren't leader shy). Split the leader in half and put in a bead chain swivel and tie a three hook rigid tie leader of 5/0 permasteel VMC straight points, if you can find them. In reverse order, I tie the first two hooks about 2in apart and the third (top hook) about 4in from the second. Before you tie the hooked part of the leader to the beadchain, slide on a 2" hootchie that will end up over the nose of the bait. We use either chartruse, glow glitter, or glow with pink spots (the hot one last week). I don't know if you really need it, but it has always worked for us, so we stick with it. Use fresh bait and insert the second hook point toward the tail about 3/4 the way down the lateral line coming out on the same side. The top hook goes under the 'chin' out the top of the head between the eyes and the third hook just dangles. You should have at least a small curve in the bait when just hanging for a moderate to fast roll while fishing. Last but not least, we use WD 40 sprayed on the bait. 14 pulls was hot for us last Thursday, but just watch for boats that are doing well and watch or ask how deep they are fishing. It may be 5-20 pulls or more. The only other advice I can give is be careful! On the low slack you are lulled into thinking "this isn't bad" and then the tide turns 2-3 hours later on the incoming and the rips are incredible. The most dynamic water you will ever see. For safety sake, we try never to drop 'off the line' at buoy 10, so boats can't come blasting past us as they realize they are being pushed back towards Buoy 12. The current runs at 4-5mph, which means your kicker is blasting. It's fantastic, exciting, and sometimes scarry, and if we're lucky the fish are with it. Fish in the rip if you dare or just to the edge. Strikes are savage and if you can get your rod out of the holder, a hook set is not needed. One more thing, please don't let your boat steer itself while fighting a fish out there. Have someone on the wheel at all times. Being run over by someone not paying attention is no fun and dangerous, by experience. We'll be in a 17ft Boston Whaler:Tuna Maru. Stop by and let us know how you're doing. Have a Great Day! Tight Lines.
