Think you know something about Steelhead?
I thought that might get your attention.
Ok...lets say a stranger approached you and informed you that he wanted to get into Steelhead, but had no clue what he was doing, had no equipment, nada...zero...zilch.
What would you tell him? Equipment? Books?!? Fly, cast, spin?? Techniques? Good spots? Seasons? Books?!? Anything...
Yes, this is for me. I see pictures of people catching BIG fish, and I am ready for it. I have caught some nice sized trout, some great sized bass (in Texas), and am ready to graduate to the REALLY big fish.
Any and all help is appreciated.

Hey Tex, browse thru this ifish BB and look for tech topics for getting a lot of good info. You can also use the search feature to find topics about specific methods, and times of the year. ...
For books, I suggest accessing www.amatobooks.com for a great inventory of NW fishing books about salmon and steelhead fishing; and other species of fish too. Good Luck.

Re: Think you know something about Steelhead?
There is way too much to cover all at once about steelhead fishing. Magazines like Salmon Trout Steelheader as well as sporting goods stores like Great American Tackle and Fisherman's are also good for starters. Hiring a guide is another good way to learn a lot all at once and give yourself a very good head start.
When me and my dad started steelheading we started totally from scratch with little to no help. It took me two years of fishing every weekend of the season just to catch my first one, and that was back around some of the good old days. We started out with poor equipment, and little knowledgs on techniques.
A big peice of advice is to learn on method and stick to it and learn it well. Also, stick to one or two rivers/areas and get to know them. Take lots of notes and stuff too.

Re: Think you know something about Steelhead?
CT,
Dave gave you some good advice. Find an area/river. Focus on it. Make some friends. Stick to it till you have mastered that river and the techniques. You might subscribe to fishing and hunting news. It is old news, but lots of good information for next year. last, Guides are worth the money if you are just starting out. Imagine, drifting down your river of choice, seeing the bank access areas, learning the holes, having an expert to ask questions.....Well worth the money. Good luck.......have fun....

Re: Think you know something about Steelhead?
The best advice I could give you is to hire a guide for a day.
Well that and you could wait by the cleaning station for RT to clean his fish and catch it as it flew off the table
Just kidding RT.
He has the tenderest fish bar none
Good luck,
Mr. F.

Re: Think you know something about Steelhead?
I'd agree with RT amato publications have the knowledge your after. Salmon Trout Steelheader will likely have many articles youo to learn from as well as many ads that can show you the equipment you will need. Hiring David Johnson or any of the ifish guides would be a great way to learn while putting fish on your table. Good luck to you.

Binoculars.....an open mind.....and just go fishing. I have more than one friend who can sit around and ask questions for hours and hours. I explain what I can, but in all reality there are a lot of things that you can't pick up without hours of 'rod in hand' time.
