How many on dial up Internet connection
I had some pics deleted because of people that are on dial up, how many people here are still on that? Is this a case of the minority over the majority or am I not in touch. I haven't had dial up since 1983.
I realize there are isolated areas that can't get at least DSL but am curious how many are on dial up. I am fortunate to have fiber optic and when new stuff comes around that is connected with faster speeds on the net, I'm there.

Re: How many on dial up Internet connection
I don't have access to cable or DSL, but I do have satellite. I can't imagine going back to dial up.

Re: How many on dial up Internet connection
I have only had dial up until a few months ago when the company I work for decided I needed comcast at home just in case I have to log into the company network. Best thing about it is I can use my home pc with it and they cover all the costs.

Re: How many on dial up Internet connection
I was connected at 21,500 BPS. using a 56K modem. Looking at the internet was boring. getting E-mail was a long & slow. Click & down load.. go eat dinner, take shower, come back mails is 60% downloaded... Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
$60 bucks a month OUCHIEs... now high speed WIFI.
I feel sorry for the folks on Phone lines, They are the ones that are hurting!!!..

Re: How many on dial up Internet connection
My WIFI works almost everywhere I go, I cant drag a phone line across the state. I am guessing its a very low percentage of folks, and they are not working while doing it. Most employers and contractors demand you have a quick connect.
Dont change what we do for someone on dialup, please. Sounds PC, not progressive to me.

Re: How many on dial up Internet connection
We down-graded to dial-up. Went 9 months w/o any connection. It's slow, and I don't even bother trying to upload video clips. But, it's better than no connection. Any other service would cost us at least twice as much, if not 5 or 6 times, since we don't have any TV connection, either.
If or when we have more disposable income, we will upgrade.

Re: How many on dial up Internet connection
I use dial up from home. I refuse to do business with Comcast and I see no reason to pay $21.95 a month to Verizon to get e-mail.
I would rather pick up the phone and call people than pay for high speed DSL.
I'm not a gamer so low speed works for me.

Re: How many on dial up Internet connection
No cable or DSL access available, but do have the grand-dady of HS internet.... ISDN @ $85/mo for 128K. If it weren't for working at home once in a while I'd go back to dial-up. Qwest pricing for ISDN is rediculous, and when you have a problem, no one there knows anything about ISDN - they want to send you to the DSL group who then tells you they don't know anything about ISDN.
Sorry... a little of subject, but a sore topic.

Re: How many on dial up Internet connection
Why is it called "dial" up?
I haven't seen a dial phone since 1980.

Doesn't dial up require a home phone? Have not had one of those in 8 years. I did not know that dial up was still offered

I didn't know they even had DSL in Toledo. Mom and Dad are still on dial up. The only thing I know they even have access to is satellite. There dial up is particularly slow too. Grandma and Grandpa have dial up too but theirs is surprisingly fast. I've got cable here at school.

Re: How many on dial up Internet connection
dialup here. one street over they have fiber optics down the street. we have multi-patch 1964 phone wire. definition of multi-patch: a dozen or more splices between me and the good line, cuts by graders, backhoes, cable tv trenchers, phone line trenchers, electrical line diggers. when they run a real line down my street i'll consider changing

Re: How many on dial up Internet connection
Still on "dial-up" at home and I don't think we will ever get cable run out to our area. Maybe when the kids are through college I'll fork out the money for satellite.

Actually, the pictures were much wider than the Ifish page, so you couldn't see any of them all at once. The 500kb size is a lot larger than the 25k necessary for proper web display and does affect dial up users, but it was really the enormous size that was a problem.

I have the answer to this problem. CATCH SMALLER FISH. That way you can fit them on the page. I will catch the big fish. Since I have Comcast I will be able to post them here. Sounds like a good shake all around.

Re: How many on dial up Internet connection
FYI - you don't have to be "isolated" to not have cable TV or high speed internet!! We live in between Salem and McMinnville on the valley floor, between two state highways, but it's farm country, not densely populated, so we do without and only have dial-up. A few years ago they came out and tore up county right of way across the front of my property to run fiber optic cable for somebody's benefit, but other than the mess they left it had no effect for us. I can get Verizon cell service almost anywhere else up and down the valley EXCEPT from home. And there just isn't enough stuff on 'must miss TV' to make me fork over the $$ for satellite.
BUT, Green Acres is the place for me!
Sorry to be so backward and ruin your coolness..., but can't you find better things to do with your time (and money)?

Re: How many on dial up Internet connection
Been on dsl verizon for a year and some for 15.95 a month. They keep tring to upgrade me, to faster speeds. I say no even slow dsl is way better then dial up. The price is right check it out. I had to sign up for a year, no problem, sign me up still getting the same price, no brainer. Its all I need.

I could see the pictures just fine and they were under 500k. Maybe you should have a limit on uploaded sizes on the server so when linking images you can't load them, that is available. And 25k for a web image, get real, you will have a thumbnail for that or it will be pixilated. Even the ifish server allows larger ones than that. Not trying to be a pain but now I have to work at putting up pics of the largest event in the northwest!
And how is stating that Al Gore invented the internet against the AUP, couldn't find it in there Doesn't reference anything political or otherwise, was only illustrating how long it has been since on dial up.
