Question Costa Rica Fly Info

Long time no see, all, I've been in Alaska for 13 months and so no posts (although I rarely posted to the fly forum). I'll be near Jaco, Costa Rica for 5 weeks this winter. This is the west coast so the flats and all they offer are not an option. I can find lots of fly information on the east coast and lots of deep water guides on the west, but little to nothing on the rivers, lakes, lagoon and surf opportunities in the Pacific.

Have any of your traveled and fished here and can you share any info on expat fly fish buds, websites, guides, books, videos etc. that might help me? Sure, I'll chase roosters, I saw the movie, but as that stoner dude said "its a hard game". Any help is appreciated.

Here's a shot from the Talachulitna, June of this year.

I lived in Costa Rica near San Jose for eight months a few years back. Work took up most of my time, so I only managed to get out on a charter once. The ocean fishing is great.

The Tico Times is the English language newspaper, and they have a weekly fishing column. Here's a link: http://www.ticotimes.net/fishing.htm

There's a hotel in downtown San Jose that is "headquarters" for the traveling fishermen. Many stay there, and there's a booking service for all kinds of guides and resorts. I don't recall it's name, but anyone in the area familiar with the fishing scene would be able to hook you up. (Hint: the building is pink stucco, and the bar is infested with pretty girls.)

Have fun down there. Costa Rica and the Ticos are great!

Mike

Thumbs up Re: Costa Rica Fly Info

Mike, the quote at the bottom of your post from our friend Mr. Walton reminds me to remind you all that the Compleat Angler is available for free (no copyright infringement but read the disclaimer, its 450 years old). Still a great read, one that will accompany me to Costa Rica. Check it out at http://www.gutenberg.org/etext/683 although its probably out there elsewhere on the web as well.

I'd recommend contacting Dennis Brown. Here is a link to his website. Please say hi to him for me:
