Leupold 1X4. Look at the Hunter benchrest guys shooting 25 into a quarter at 300yrds. with a 6X. You can do it and the quick field of view at 1.5X will pay off more often than a 7X or 9X. My .02 Good Luck

Or Maybe a 1.5X5 illuminated Leupold; they're legal you know!

I just put a 4.5-14X40 Nikon Buckmasters on my AR15 and dialed it in at 200 yards last weekend at Tri-County Gun Club; I really like the scope.

A good blacktail rifle should not have anything above 4.5 on the bottom end.
Trust me.....a 6.5-20x is TOO MUCH SCOPE! Hard to find a deer in the brush at 50yds on 6.5!
a 4-12x or 4.5-14x would make a good all round scope.
But also nothing wrong with the good ol 3-9x either.

I doo think that optics QUALITY is more important than magnification.
A high quality 3-9x will serve you better than a cheap high power scope.

Quality glass is the most important. BUT!! Ive got a Nikon Monarch in 4x12x40 and its nice glass...Its too much magnification on the low end for western oregon hunting. I think it will be traded out with a 3.5x10x44 Nikon real soon.

For me it would depend on if I was hunting East or West. East side I prefer 3.5x10x40. West side, just like baltz suggested, 2.5x8.

And I agree, quality is what I look for first.

I would say a 4.5 - 14 x40mm in either a Nikon Pro staff or a Leupold vx 2 or greater

Just get a Leupold VX-II in a 3-9x40. At $299 they're a bargain. Just a great scope for the money and it's all you'll ever need.

I just put a Burris Fullfield II on my .30-06. It has their ballistic plex reticle.

The clarity and resolution is fantastic. Fully multi-coated lenses, etc.

I looked at many, many scopes in the $250 range and this one beat them all. I think it's a much better scope than the Leupold VX-1 by a LONG shot. No question about that.

I used Leupold 1-piece mount and can't remember which rings.

Cabella's has a screaming deal right now. That scope and a pair of Burris Legend binos fro $199. The binos are pretty good too. Compact 8x32.

Go with the Burris.

You really don't need anything more than 4x to shoot Elk out to 250yds. I used to be addicted to high power scopes, but anymore I like smaller more compact scopes. If I was to do a variable on an Elk rig right now,I'd probably go to something like a 1-4x. I might even just go to a fixed 4x.

I definately wouldn't go more than 2-7.

I really like my bushnell elete 4500 2.5-10x 40. low mag for the thick timber, but some high mag for those long shots.

At that range a good fixed 4X would work great. Less expensive, more durable, and fewer variables to ponder. You can find excellent deals on used Leupold M8's. Also look at Nikon, Sightron and Weaver fixed 4's.

I have a Leupold Vari X III 2.5 x 8 on a 338 win mag.
The best thing about Leupold is if you shoot the same load, the scope is always right on year after year!

I hunt with a 4x scope on my 270 win. Shots out past 150 yards get hairy with this magnification, but the low light shooting is amazing. I can see better through my scope after sundown in the last minutes of legal light than i can with my eyes. definately good for a brush rifle

I missed my first deer because I had my scope turned up too high and couldn't find the animal when I brought the rifle up. I haven't taken my Leupold VX-II off of 4x since then, except to zero the rifle.

My .35 Whelen sports a Nikon fixed 4 power (buckmaster). Great set up, and if you're interested and don't mind buying on the internet, check out Midway. They're having a pretty good clearance on some Nikon scopes. My .270 wears a 2 x 7 cheap Pine Ridge (now about 10 years old and no problems btw), which is just about perfect. But I still like fixed power scopes, they tend to be very durable. I have a .30-06 somewhere in NM with an OLD, old fixed 4 power Bushnell Banner post crosshair, it's still one of the best hunting scopes I've ever used. My kid's 7x57 has a Sightron 3 x 9, it's a nice scope too.

3x9x40 seems to work well in any situation. Where i elk hunt 100yds would be a long shot, the scope never goes over 4x, But my deer hunting often times involves shots from 100-350yds(my personal max is 350). i often will go up to 6-7x in the long shots.
