Too many boats down
PLEASE!!! Make sure the craft you are fishing in is Ocean worthy before you go to Buoy 10!
This morning another boat went down at the North Jetty. Last report at 8 was there were three people in the water.
Sunday, the Coast Guard rescued 21 boats in distress.
Most often these are not ocean worthy boats. Many times, boats meant for water skiing, etc, or drifting.
You must have adequate freeboard, and back up power sources. Make sure your bilge pump is working too, huh Jim?

Re: Too many boats down
I guess it's really hellish out there today.
2 lives have been lost, according to Tuttle bait.
A skipper in a crab boat went down. Don't know if that is the one with deaths, but there were still people in the water when I spoke with him.
The swell at Buoy 10 is at 8 feet, and out in the ocean 8 to 12.
Many boats down today, and many lives at risk.
Keep the families in your prayers, and if I were you, I wouldn't challenge the sea today.
Jen

Re: Too many boats down
Jenny is right - I know the captain of the crabber that went down - Robbie Greenfield. He was cut out by the Coast Guard just north of the North Jetty on the Columbia bar. His two deckhands are missing and presumed dead. His boat washed up on the beach. It was a 45' crabber and a brand new boat - must have been a wierd breaker - those crab boats go through conditions worse than that all winter long. Below is a link to the story. I've got other friends out looking for them but if they don't find them in the first hour they probably won't.

Re: Too many boats down
I just talked to a crabber friend of mine who was out looking for the two deckhands. His boat is the big one in the pictures on KGW.com He said they called off the search. Apparently they didn't flip on the bar, they were out running gear off Benson beach when a breaker hit them and flipped them over. Folks are pretty distrought over it down there. That's just a reminder to always watch for those sneaker waves even when you make it over the bar safely.

Re: Too many boats down
I just got back from down there and it is rough and the wind was really starting to blow at about 9 this morning. We launched at canby point and ran out and turned around and came back in. I know the swell was at least 8' if not higher, we were figuring closer to 10 on some of the ones we went through. Saw some awful small boats out there also, hope everyone pays attention. That isn't a place to take lightly.

Okay, I'll be the grumpy old man again. Don't go out there and die for a Coho, unless you know what you are doing and it's safe for the day!! Even boats this big have trouble some days, with seasoned pilots at the helm.

Re: Too many boats down
before you even think about going to bouy 10 check the columbia river bouy on the puter---
national data bouy center www.ndbcnoaa.gov/station
if that isn't right address check with jen.
this is the most valuable peice of imformation you can get and could save your life.
I use this imfo for size of swells and wind condition, at nehalem for instance ,if the swells are 6 ft. you arent getting out except at high tide--- also wind condtions are given and the direction, sw wind I go south,nw wind I go north, ect.this imfo is also avalable on channell 3 on your weather radio which I check every hr.
if you are really interested you can check every bouy around the world
