Dog Vests?
I have a couple of labs that hunt quite often. The problem is that every vest I buy to keep them protected litteraly gets ripped apart in a few hunts. Barbed wire is tough on neoprene not to mention their skin. I was wondering if anyone had an idea of wear to find a real dog hunting vest?

Cabelas armor flex is almost bullet proof.I highly recommend the armortex.I think you may have answered my question on my thread.

Re: Dog Vests?
The vest I'd been using on my lab finally gave up the ghost at the end of last season, so I'm in the market myself.
The one I was using was a plain old Avery vest with no frills.
Sportsman's Warehouse has a good looking vest, but the extra protection on the bottom portion may be a bit abrasive.

Re: Dog Vests?
I just got the Avery Boaters vest for my dog. It seems pretty tough so far. I have been training her in it every day that is cold enough, and no wear so far. I like the handle on top.
I know what you mean though, I watched a hard charging dog destroy a brand new vest in one retrieve in the blackberries. I don't know if there is a vest that will stand up to really tough stuff.

Re: Dog Vests?
Do you guys do any upkeep on the vests? Vader is always ripping his up and then I pull out the sewing machine and sew up the rips. We're going into season 3 on it now (a SW vest).

Re: Dog Vests?
I had two armor flex vests last year. Litterally within two days both vest were unuseable. When hunting pheasants you need a vest that doesnt get the dogs to hot but protects their back and belly from barbed wire and sticks?

Re: Dog Vests?
I was checking everywhere and this vest looks interesting for upland bird hunting. http://www.retrieverworld.com/sporting_dog_vests.htm I wonder how durable this one is?

Re: Dog Vests?
I have the same type for my GSP and my "German Chocolate". It is heavy cordura nylon. It is adjustable and protects the chest and belly. It is hunter orange. I got them at SW. I have had them for 2 years and they are still solid.

Re: Dog Vests?
I bought my dog vest out of Cabelas. It is the ripstop chest protector. It protects the chest and belly. It has held up very well through fences, briars, etc...it also does a great job of protecting my dog from burrs. Golden retreivers are very hairy...so any help from burrs is good.

Re: Dog Vests?
If you're not concerned about floatation check out a "Skid Plate". They are made of bulletproof rip stop nylon and I use them on our Springers. They attach around the neck and body using straps so only the chest/belly area is protected. I like the design because it keeps them from getting overheated in warm weather.

Re: Dog Vests?
CL speaks of a product real similar to the ripstop vest I spoke of above. Both good products.

Re: Dog Vests?
Our boys were hunting over a friends dogs in Pasco this last weekend and he had another similar type of vest. I think it was a Remington and I saw one like it at Joe's today for $14.99. It uses Velcro closures but still seemed pretty durable for the price - the Skid Plates are around $35.

Re: Dog Vests?
Good post!!!!
Just bought my Setter/GSP [11yrs.] a Dover Saddlery 'horse blanket' type Warmer. He likes it but it is not for hunting. Ohh and he healed well from a 16" barb wire "streak" on his belly in a canyon up from the Columbia near the WA state line. Hurrah for the Oregun Hunter Assoc. pulling out that barbed sh** out of 'natural areas'. Keep it up, we're listening.
