Pistol whipping a Willy Unit Buck
Welp, it's really not the one I was looking for but I want to fish tomorrow so I took the smaller animal.
I have been watching a bedding area for months now. I was extremely happy that I drew a Willy meat tag. I have been hunting near the bed a couple morning each week since the 1st day. This morning this animal walked up on me. And stopped stone cold at 65 yards quartering towards me. I hate that shot with a pistol. But it was a "now or never" shot and I had a good rest. So fire in the hole! Kaboom.
Used .460 factory ammo. It has worked on two deer and one elk.
It took me six hours to get this buck out of the woods. I'm getting way too old to hunt alone........
Cheers. Gotta load the boat for Tillamook in the a.m.

Re: Pistol whipping a Willy Unit Buck
Sorry you had to settle for the smaller buck, but hey a man's gotta fish! Seriously though nice buck. I hope I'm as unfortunate as to have to make a choice between two of them! Hopefully fishing will be picking up for you.

Re: Pistol whipping a Willy Unit Buck
Nice job and good lookin buck. I'm going to start working on my Willie tag come November. I've never had a chance to hunt them in the rut and am going to need to break in a new bow. (Hopefully) Good luck fishing.

Re: Pistol whipping a Willy Unit Buck
Any buck is nice for me with my Willy tag. I use it as a meat tag and the first deer I see goes into the freezer. Nice job.

I know he's a blacktail, but his face is skinny like a whitetail. I'm used to those Roman nose bucks I guess.

Re: Pistol whipping a Willy Unit Buck
That is a great buck. Might not be the one you wanted, but it is worth the tag. I have taken one deer with a Hand Gun and have always wanted to do it again.
Now go get some fish

Sweet! Looks like a classic black tailed deer. Nice work on using the pistol too.

Re: Pistol whipping a Willy Unit Buck
Nice job harvesting that buck with a pistol. I took a blacktail buck many years ago with a Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 mag and will never forget it. Kudos!

Re: Pistol whipping a Willy Unit Buck
Hey that's a great handgun buck!! Great job.
Specifics man...specifics. Looks like a S&W....44 or 45LC? ...Load/Bullet? Handload or factory? Drop? What distance did ya sight for and how far are you good to?
I've always wanted to do more handgun hunting but just haven't.
Took a doe once with a 1911, but that was simply because I had my fly open and rifle slung on my shoulder.
25yds from a .45Super 230gr XTP handloaded to 1150fps did the trick.

It's a S&W .460 Mag.with Leupold scope. I shoot factory 250 gr. ammo and sight the gun in at 75 yards - my maximum "comfort range." I'm positive it will kill effectively far beyond that if you have the skills to hold on target. I can PM you some details if you like.

Re: Pistol whipping a Willy Unit Buck
Bait Bucket,
That is mind boggling to me, I have a hard enough time hitting them with a rifle, but a pistol thats AWESOME. I'm sorry you had to "Settle" for the little guy. Nice Job!
