Really Coastal Deer
I knew there were deer on the coast of Oregon but not actually on Oregon's coast. Has anyone else seen this before?
Why would deer go all the way down to below the high tide mark on a coastal beach?

Re: Really Coastal Deer
Thats interesting......lakesides, riversides, but I've never seen oceanside. It must have got spooked that direction and had no place to go. Looks like it took a pretty good stroll down the beach though.

Re: Really Coastal Deer
I have hunted down on the bay ocean spit for years, there are tons of deer down there. There are even elk that have moved in. I also hear that there are bear and a cougar that live out on the bay ocean spit.

Yes, in the pacific city, Neshkowin area, I've seen deer in the sand.
Can't think of any reason why they wouldn't be since the forest goes all the way to the ocean in some places.

Re: Really Coastal Deer
We were having dinner at the Bay House restaurant a few years ago and a doe was walking on the beach right outside our window. It added to an already amazing view.

Re: Really Coastal Deer
That doe looks like she's playing in the sand! I personally have never seen any on beach but like others have said I have seen them in the shrub and tree lines on the spits so it would make sense they take a stroll down the beach.

I've seen their tracks going right down to the ocean before. Never have seen the actual deer though. Cool pics.

Re: Really Coastal Deer
I used to live on the coast and always had seen quite a few deer in the sand dunes while camping etc. I tried hunting the dunes a few times, but they had all but disappeared when I was actually hunting. There are supposed to be some very nice bucks out there.

Yep, there's a herd of Elk - about 10 cows and calves. Given that there are calves, I'll assume there's a bull or two somewhere. I can't picture the ODFW doing artificial insemination to build a surf-herd.

Re: Really Coastal Deer
So, if you got a deer or elk down in this area, would you automatically have a "Surf-n-Turf" meal?

Re: Really Coastal Deer
Some of the largest coast bucks that I have ever seen live in the dunes south of Florence; I used to hunt all the sand between Reedsport and Florence with my in-laws who lived in Reesdsport.

I grew up on the coast and we hunted deer around the freshwater lakes around lakeside in the dunes.
Elk around Bastendorf and Sunset beach out of Coos Bay too.

Re: Really Coastal Deer
I dont hunt the beach area, but i do go down occassionally ans glass them. The population is outstanding in the dunes/beach areas and they seem to like to wade around in the surf a little, i believe it cleans the lice off of them. But there are no big ones down there, the Taxidermist was just kidding.

We used to venture out there once in a while south of Florence. You could only hunt with a shotgun back then. The trusty old 12 gage has seen a little action out there. Oh and Rick your right all does and small bucks.
