Default Ugh. Norton 08

Somehow, I accidentally (!!!) installed Norton 2008. It wouldn't let me stop, so I just went ahead with it.

I'm so tired of all this new complicated stuff. The other day I also downloaded the new Spyware Doctor and it's the same.

Tons of new drivers, installers, gadgets and Gizmos that light up my screen with garbage!

The programs have so many new components that it's just crazy. It takes forever to learn what they do. I mean, what's an anti phishing protection gizmo?

I just want the bare minimum. It doesn't make me feel more safe to add tons of things to my hard drive. It just clutters it up, and gives it more chance to conflict with my current necessary programs.

I just want protection!-- Period!

When I get a new comp, I'm going to search for new programs that only have what I need. I'd pay more for less!

So, that said, does anyone else have Norton 2008 Internet Security? Do you like it? Is it buggy? It has to be with so many new pieces to it.

I'm either going to turn off most of it, or spend 2 weeks trying to learn to use it.

Jen

Oh yeah, and my name is Jennie Logsdon Martin, and yes, this is a complaint.

I dumped everything Norton elated, about 3 years ago. Using Norton "anything" is like getting a tattoo. I have since switched to AVG. Good luck.

I quit using Symantec products on any Windows box that I use years ago, as they are almost viral in the way they take over your computer, tend to be big-time resource hogs, and are almost impossible to completely remove and return your computer to a pre-Symantec state.

I've recommended AVG Anti-Virus for a long time, and continue to do so. It's effective, has a much smaller memory footprint, and is free. Don't let the free scare you, as it is very full-featured regardless.

Firefox has anti-phishing technology built into it, so that it warns you if it looks like a phishing attempt. There are also very good anti-spyware products out there for free, including one from Microsoft themselves that works well.

Yeah, Roo keeps telling me about AVG, too.

Then he changed to MAC. That's a good option, too, I hear!

I tossed Symantec out the window due to resource hog issues and have not looked back. Funny statement they had in their KB "engineers are aware of the problem," followed by a link to purchase the enterprise version -NOT

I went to McAfee, but will probably switch to AVG when that subscription ends.

Symantec's uninstall utility leaves a little to be desired also - we had some big issues with the Enterprise edition at work and had to get a specialized uninstaller to remove the SAV 'virus' and then re-install. Let me find out if that is public domain.

I will ride the same buss. I like to call Norton an egg sucking leech. It grabs deep into your system and does not let go. It is also a CPU hog at the same time with all it's bells and whistles...

I can imagine someone who must open as much mail as you do needing some sort of antivirus but we have never had a virus problem so I guess we have not got a new one since our divorce with Norton...

I did find a great program called Window Washer and it runs about 20 or 25 buckeroos and it cleans out all the temp files and registry crud you get after browsing the web. It also takes out tracking cookies and spyware the same as any good antispy does. I have had it also remove trojans. Keeps your system clean like a glass or O.J.

Deleting all of your cache and temp stuff from windows will not clean like this one can. I used to do all that stuff and when I first ran this program it took out 6.2 gigs of crud that windows delete all could not find....Now installed on all of our computers and run weekly for a clean smooth drive..

Is not virus control though

As for virus you can prolly find something less offensive then Norton, hope someone here can give you a name to try

Dumped Norton years ago and have not looked back once. I use Trendmicro here on all systems. It has all of the needed "bells & whistles" without the huge overhead.
I also run Webroot SpySweeper here and Mozilla which keeps the system(s) clean as a whistle.

Jen, By the advice I received here I installed (by myself) the AVG program. As you know I'm not up to speed with computers, however, I haven't had a problem since installing AVG.
BTW thanks again Dave for the advice.

I'll hang my head in shame, but I love Noton, but only the anti-virus program. I had nothing but conflicts using their other products. I'm a firm believer in anti-virus and anti-spyware programs and think anything is better than nothing. I've worked on to many computers that have been crashed because people had out dated programs. Most programs once you learn to use them are pretty simple but it helps having a go to guy at first, or just be brave and start pushing options, really brave! oh and have a restore disc handy during the learning curve.

I have been using various version of Norton for many years and really like it, until I loaded it with Norton 360 recently when my subscription expired.
I enjoyed the Anti virus and the Norton Utilities software for trouble shooting the PC and keeping it up and running smoothly. Then bought the 360 software and it "bugs me" the way it operates and what it does and doesn't do?

Removing old Norton can be a challenge? I downloaded Avast free version and still keep getting Norton Renewal POP ups after deleting what I thought was the program from my old spare computer.

Norton utilities for PC tune ups and problem solving is great! Anti virus is good. Norton 360 not as good as the previous software in my case.

I've heard bad things about Norton myself, which is a drag since not only have I enjoyed it's seemingly un-penetrable protection. My daughter & son-in-law have worked for Symantec for many years singing it's praises to the world.
That being said, I'm on a beta-trial of MSoft's One Care, and thinking of going over to Kaspersky's Anti-viral suites.

I upgraded my new PC, and haven't allowed Norton on it since I've heard it's a resource pig, and have experienced the challenges of deleting it fully.

Ah, in my case .. I'm just one of those with enough knowledge to be dangerous, and clueless enough not to know better

I just resently too got sick and tired of the resource hogs of Norton and McAfee products. And they make it so difficult to get rid of and uninistall. Corporate computer geek told me about Trend Micro. Very pleased. I didn't get the whole suite, just the Virus 07 which also includes spyware blocker. Very unintrusive but works great. Special version for Vista included that I've had no problems with.
Highly recommend.

use google to search for a utility NONAV2.11 it will get rid of all of norton. Not sure if it is version specific or not, but we use it to remove so we can reinstall when the corp policy gets corrupted
