Archers...who's hunting in the "loosers bracket"
That's what we call the late cow/deer hunts, when you don't connect during the "real" season.
I didn't have much opportunity to elk hunt here after my Nevada trip, the family wasn't keen on me being away from the house. I blew my one opportunity at a calf standing broadside at 33 yards...I guessed 45 yards, and it was much steeper downhill than I thought; airmailed the arrow right over the top of it. Felt pretty stupid, after my Robin Hood-like exploits in NV.
Didn't have an archery deer tag, planning on taking the kids on a weekend-long hunting trip to my old private ranch stomping grounds on the south coast for a rifle hunt near the end of October.
Who else will be working the wet brush the late season?

Re: Archers...who's hunting in the "loosers bracket"
when shooting downhill I always aim at their feet. Works for me.
I too will be hunting the late season for elk, one of my step sons will be with me looking for his deer.
I only seen 6 elk this hunting season total. 1 nice 6pt bull and the rest were cows at different times.
They were not in their usual areas.

Re: Archers...who's hunting in the "loosers bracket"
Because of my work load and tuna and halibut I didn't get a chance to hunt much this first season so I'll be out there. The days I did get to hunt left me feeling like a winner, aint no looser bracket in my heart.

Re: Archers...who's hunting in the "loosers bracket"
As from the poll post, I didn't hunt early.
I may hunt late depending on how waterfowling turns out.
I might be tempted to hunt blacktail in the rut, but since I've never killed, or packed an elk. I don't know if I want to attempt getting one out by myself during late season conditions on the westside.

0 for me, i did learn some lessons tho, like have an arrow knocked when you hit the cow call. sittin by the truck is a good spot for the big buck that i spent all day trackin.

Re: Archers...who's hunting in the "loosers bracket"
Hopefully I will be able to get back out there for the late season. I would rather call it the "Patient archer bracket".

Oregon ... I'll be back
Washington ... no more passing  the cows in the freezer and the relief of having some elk meat this year will work much nicer than putting out a contract to have the old lady's mouth duct taped shut.
By the way, if you know my wife and you tell her I posted this I will deny it p

Not me
I bagged my cow on our last hunt day just so I didn't have to hunt in the rain again this year

Re: Archers...who's hunting in the "loosers bracket"
I'll be out for late season, although probably not that hard. Thanks to a couple of Montana tags (and a well placed shot by my brother), I'm good to go as far as meat is concerned this year.
My buddy from Montana has a deer tag here, so we'll be tryin' to score on a blacktail, rattled in for him. If an opportunity presents itself on one of those hunts, then I'll probably take it.

Re: Archers...who's hunting in the "loosers bracket"
Well With any luck I'll have a new wall tent with a nice hot stove in there and I'll be hunting the late season. Im getting the hot water tank on the side of the wood stove so I can make hot coco and hot cider with a touch of brandy. I'll keep it about 78 to 80 degrees in there. so after the days hunt your all invited to share a cup and play some texas hold um! ( my favorite part of the late season) Oh Yea I'll try and shoot a cow as well.
Hows that song go Its the second archery elk season and all the guys are here, we havent shot an elk yeat but we sure have drank some beer. the only time we leave the camp is when we go for beer. Its the second season elk camp . its my favorite time of year! ><><><>< LOL

Re: Archers...who's hunting in the "loosers bracket"
My step son has a Willy tag and a general bow tag, so if he gets one with the Willy, I might break away and hunt for a cow in the late season. I have a bruised ego after trying to get an elk for the second time.
You definately need to know a herd, their movements, and focus on one area from what I can tell.

Re: Archers...who's hunting in the "loosers bracket"
I actually prefer the late season...The only thing as much fun as bugling bulls is elk tracks in the fresh snow..
Game ON!!!

Re: Archers...who's hunting in the "loosers bracket"
No sucess for me yet this year...at least as far as shots or meat on the ground. I have a great time anytime that I am out in the woods...either alone or with hunting buddies.
I really only had one serious weekend (over at Murderers Creek) which was a great time as I have spent too much "family" time this year.
