I have enjoyed reading all the hunting stories and seeing the trailcam pics over the last month so last night I decided to join you all and start sharing my own stories.
This year started with great expectations. After a scouting trip out east in July we saw so much sign we knew this was going to be a good year. On Thursday before opening day my wife and I loaded up the kids and headed for the hills on a ten day trip.
On Friday before opening day I was heading in to hang my tree stand. I had waited until noon to move in hoping everything would have left the area for their beds, in stead I jumped three nice bucks, Bummer!!
I hung my stand and headed back to camp. First two days I had several does come in. Day three a forked horn came in at first light, he left after thirty minutes. Then I heard something else coming in, a couple of cows, the larger of the two stood broadside and put one leg forward as if to say " I'm ready to go, please take me." A perfectly placed arrow and she went down within sixty yards.
I went back to camp to gather some help, the others were not back from the morning hunt so my seven year old son and I headed off to recover my elk. I let my son follow the blood trail to our prize. He was a big help on the hill. When the others showed up, we made short work of that cow. After a two hundred yard down hill drag to the truck, we were done.
Now my season is far from over, in fact I am finding my self in a place that I have not been in a while. The end of first season and I still have a deer tag. Second season can't come soon enough!
