Default East Lake

Took a trip up to East Sat. Bought a couple planer boards as a new theory/toy for targeting browns. Never fished with them before . Got 3 in the 1st hour before it slowed down. My partner got his 1st brown ever.

Rapalas worked early, then we started going thru the tackle box. I know these guys generally don't bite much except for the 1st and last couple hours of daylight, but what a beautiful place to spend the day.
I can never get enough of this place, and less than an hour from my front door.

I had a theory toward the end of the day to hook 1 end of the planer board to my electric downrigger, on fast decent, it rats nested my cable and I spent the last hour on shore trying to untangle it. Brought it home and finally ended up cutting and peeling and splicing a new cable on it.
This theory has some bugs to work out before I do it again.

I've often thought about those planer boards? thought that for shallow water browns, not having the boat go over there head before the lure might make all difference! Just never been around anybody thats tried them! hope that works for you.

WHY did it tangle your downrigger?

It did not have enough weight/momentum to keep up with the rate of the downrigger powering the cable out to keep it from ratsnesting. Possibly by using the manual knob I can control the cable, like measuring pulls on a level wind.

I've watched a few Great Lakes fishing shows and I've seen episodes where they are trolling with side planners. I would bet if you looked around on line someone on one of the Great Lakes forums could give you some pointers. Hey we gave them the Salmon they owe us.
