Default Weekend Buoy 10 report

I fished out of Hammond this weekend and I thought I’d give a fishing report. My friend and I started at Buoy 10 on Saturday around 8:00am. The ramp was packed and it took about 30 minutes to launch. Started fishing at the line and we landed 1 fish and lost 3 at the boat by the start of the rip at noon. I landed my second keeper at about 3:00pm and we quit at 5:30pm with 2 keepers, 5 long line releases and maybe 5 more bites that didn’t hookup.

On Sunday we left Hammond about 6:00am and the VHF weather report change from 20-knot winds in the afternoon to 10-knot winds so we went out to the CR buoy. Hooked the first fish in 5 minutes and then had 4 more bites before we lost the school. We trolled west and then north trying to find the fish and things got pretty rough. At 10 the small craft advisory went out on the radio and we only had landed 2 keepers but the natives were hitting like crazy. We landed 8 natives before we landed our lasted keeper at noon. We lost so many fish it was sick. I lost about 10 fish and had so many bites I couldn’t keep track. We tried all different kinds of hooks except ‘Gammys’. I have to figure out how to tie a slip knot with barbless ‘Gammys’.

So, the two of us landed a total of 12 fish on Sunday with only 4 being keepers. There was an awesome bite between 11:00 am and noon. My buddy couldn’t get his bait out because I had him bait my rig every few minutes. The seas were so rough I couldn’t do anything but keep the boat straight and hold on. This guy never gets seasick and I’m turning green but the bite was hot. We used whole fresh herring at 12 to 15 pulls.

We headed in and man it was rough. I have an 18-foot Formula Vee inboard with a 9.9 Honda and it took a pounding. I have a few repairs to make before the next trip. I came over one wave at buoy 2 and almost landed on a 12-foot Zodiac with two guys sitting on coolers just fishing away like they were in a pond.

Well, sorry so long but there was a lot of stuff going on. Can someone tell me how to keep these fish on? I’ve fished in the good years of buoy 10 and can’t remember every losing so many fish. The only fish that were hooked great were the natives.

Went out with Fishead Vic and my old friend Maynard on Saturday. We fished out of Chinook. Got a late start because I flooded my big motor at the ramp and then ran my battery down. Waited and finally got it started. Fished straight out of Chinook and up below the Church hole. Water was pretty rough and we only had one or two short strikes. Moved up around the wing dams and started hitting fish after the river settled down. Had eight on. Lost one nice chinook. Released a few and took two keepers home. Cut plugged herring seem to be the ticket. We had a great time overall and we will be back! I want more Chinook!

We put in at Hammond on Saturday around 9:30 am. Fished Buoy 10 on the incoming all day. It was a lot slower than the Wed. opener. Not that many nets out. We only ended up with 2 keepers and 1 native. 2 of our fish caught were on the outgoing tide when we were trolling back towards Buoy 20.

A lot of fisherman that we talked to went home without!

One of the guys we work with was out on Sunday in the ocean. The action was fast and furious but they only lasted about an hour and a half. Ocean was too lumpy and windy! They had 5 keepers, caught 4 natives and had beaucoup takedowns!!!!!

Kroy, Coho have very soft mouths. Was your drag down too much? Just a thought.

Some days short strikes and lost fish just happen. One of the reasons for a lot of short strikes is there are a bunch of jacks/small fish out there. They just can't get their mouth on the bait good enough.

Kroy:

The last time I went to the pond I used a different setup than a diver. I just used a dropper with a fresh herring trailing behind. I did get some hits where there was nothing there but every fish I hooked I got to the boat and identified. I set my drag just above where it would payout normally and let the fish take link for a good 3 or 4 seconds when the hit came on. One of those babies had nearly swallowed the herring thereby hooking itself behind the lower jaw, that little critter was not coming out.

At this fishing fair once I saw a video of a salmon coming up to the bait, hitting it with its nose then taking the bait and away it went. That sounds like what those coho are doing.

******,
I think on some fish your right. We tried to play them light but we'd clamp down to pull them to the net and pop.

David,
I did catch one small jack about 12 inches so you’re probably right on the little guys. I did hook 3 big natives though on the free-spool technique after the small strike.

Does anyone else use barbless or are you using barbed hooks?
