What is the worst thing you have forgotten on a hunting trip?
Hi guys,
I'm leaving for my first Eastern Oregon deer hunt in a week. I'm sweating it because I always forget something on a trip like this.
The have a name for it: Can't Remember Stuff Syndrome.
Anyone else suffer from the Curse --> CRSS?
Usually, I forget something small, but I've forgotten my sleeping bag before. OK, I've forgotten it two different times. Not good.
What's the worst thing you have ever forgotten on a hunting trip?
Cheers,
Motor

My tent, had to wrap a few tarps around some trees for a few days. Luckly I have one of those air mattresses thats up on a frame so I was not sleeping on the ground.
Also this year on a fishing trip I remembered the tent be forgot the poles, it was fun rigging that up in the dark with a head lamp on and a ton of bugs in my face.

Hunting Boots.
Of course it was cold day in January with snow on the ground side hilling for chukar in tennis shoes…that wasn’t my favorite day. Added bonus only shot 3 birds for 9 hours of walking, ruined said tennis shoes, but hunting boots where freshly waxed back at home in the garage.

My clothes for an 8 day elk hunt near John Day. Luckily, Dad who was home in Portland knew of a co-worker who would be passing through JD who delivered the goods.

Re: What is the worst thing you have forgotten on a hunting trip?
One year I forgot the adult beverage for the trip and received a lashing all week from my buddys. I have also forgot my ammo before. I am in the same boat where I absolutely lose all memory functions when hunting season rolls around.......it's a plague I tell ya. I'll let ya know how this year goes.

Re: What is the worst thing you have forgotten on a hunting trip?
One time I stopped to re adjust my pack. I walked off thinking everything felt much lighter. About 30 min later, I discovered I left my gun on the ground where I made the adjustment. It took over an hour of of searching to relocate my rifle.

Re: What is the worst thing you have forgotten on a hunting trip?
We ran into a bunch of guys from oregon bow hunting up on the lolo motorway last weekend. we were coming home from a high mountain lake fishing trip when one of the guys flagged us down as we were driving past their camp. The young guys were out bow hunting and the older guy (camp cook, etc) said he'd forgotten his sharpening stones. well, thats a pretty big dilemma when your cleaning a bull elk. unfortunately, I didn't have my stones with me. However, we did come home with some fresh smoked cr salmon and a new friend

I was running late for a fishing trip one time, and when I pulled up to my friends house to pick him up, he walked out of the house and asked me, "Where's the boat"? I told him that I'd be right back!

Re: What is the worst thing you have forgotten on a hunting trip?
I forgot to put ice in the chest
Skinning and caping knives (takes a while with a dull Barlow)
Gun and licence/tags
And once I forgot to pick up my brother when his truck broke down ...

Actually, I've always been pretty organized and I have a really thorough "Hunting, Fishing, Camping Checklist" done in excel. It has check and double-check columns and space available to add special items for a particular outing. I've developed the list over many years. It's easy to update periodically. When a trip is coming up, I print it out (it's legal-size paper and three full columns - - - multi-use/purpose). Then, I line-out the things I don't need for that particular trip and start working through what remains on the checklist for this trip.
I have, however, showed-up at camp a time-or-two - - not so much having forgotten something - - what I sometimes do (and, gladly, so far this hasn't happened with a really important item) is to "know" the item is in there and check it off without actually looking - - - Oh, yea, there's dish washing soap in the trailer, check it off, wrong :frown: . 'Have to watch myself about that! Don

Re: What is the worst thing you have forgotten on a hunting trip?
Nothing, ever.... The reason is that I spend 352 days previous worrying about it and a full 2 weeks going thru everything I own and deciding whether or not I could need it on the trip. I usually end up actually using less than 10% of the crap I bring along.

I got all the way out to my spot... 1/2 way up the trail in the predawn hours on opening morning and figured out I had left my tags back on the nightstand... so I had little choice but to go back and get them.

Re: What is the worst thing you have forgotten on a hunting trip?
On my way to boardman for some ducks, about Hood River, I realized I had forgot the decoys! Turned around, grabbed them. Between Cascade Locks and Hood River, a mud slide had now closed I-84, turned around again, back to the Bridge of the Gods in Cascade Locks, east on 14, back across to I-84 at Hood River, and into Boardman. A very long morning to shoot a couple of ducks!

Re: What is the worst thing you have forgotten on a hunting trip?
I put everything I could simply not forget into my green bag This was my simple strategy to make sure I would not forget anything. Double checked my list to make sure I had everything.
Left the green bag by the door.

Re: What is the worst thing you have forgotten on a hunting trip?
There was a time when I had no way to lock my rifles so(per "her" request) I removed the bolt from my Ruger. Got to the hunt and guess what wasn't in my rifle.
Tough to send lead down range with out a bolt.
Another time, I got to my fathers house for a late season bow hunt and as I carried his bow to the jeep I realized I hadn't put mine in at home. Luckily, I didn't live far from him at the time. As it turned out, I didn't really need the bow that day anyway.

Re: What is the worst thing you have forgotten on a hunting trip?
My rifle bolt! 40 miles from town. Hunted the morning with shotgun from tree stand that day (I'd brought the shotgun for grouse and had a couple of slugs for 'yotes). Called wife from town that afternoon, she shipped via Fed Ex the bolt to the county sheriff's office. Hunted again that night from tree stand with shotgun. Next afternoon, drove back to town (another 40 miles one way on rutted, dusty road) to get the shipped bolt. 160 miles of gnashing teeth. Reason bolt not with the rifle was after sighting in, put bolt in different location so neither kids nor any potential thief would have a workable gun to mess. Still praised the sheriff for allowing me to use the office for shipping destination. They were open round-the-clock so overnight shipping was possible. Never got a shot for the entire season!

Re: What is the worst thing you have forgotten on a hunting trip?
As I pulled into the parking spot at my favorite spot for ducks in South Dakota, I realized I didn't have my waders.
Drove back to town, about 25 miles, and got them.
Kind of worked out OK because as I was walking in to the pothole, right at shooting light, I was able to jump shoot two nice greenheads

Re: What is the worst thing you have forgotten on a hunting trip?
Many moons ago I showed up at a hunting area to meet a buddy for a duck hunt. We talked for about ten minutes when he decided to show me his new shotgun. As I was appreciating his new purchase I suddenly had that sick feeling and realization that I had forgotten MY shotgun! I was in that emotional state that is hard to describe but is a mishmash of anger and disapointment and how the HE _ _ can I fix this? I asked him " You didn't happen to bring your old one did ya?" Nope! I checked my watch and I had three hours before the hunt area would let us check in. It was an hour and a half to the house so I drove like a mad man, flew in the door scarring my wife awake, kissed her and grabbed my shotgun and flew back to the hunt area about five seconds before the line started to move. We had a good hunt day but.........I wouldn't drive like that again.

Re: What is the worst thing you have forgotten on a hunting trip?
My "best" is forgetting my 20ga. on a Dove hunt. I borrowed my friends rig and got it and made it back to get some shooting.
I've also forgotten the occasional tag (once on a permit zone hunt )
Lunches, knives.......Maybe if I'd put the beer down while I'm loading I'd do a better job..... ......Naaa

I arrived in camp after a six hour drive. My buddies were already there- well, minus one.
I forgot to pick him up
This was before cell phones, of course.

Re: What is the worst thing you have forgotten on a hunting trip?
I forgot to tell my duck hunting partner to "pick his feet up" when wading thru flooded fields in the cold month of December. He took one step which left his foot trapped under a branch and did a face plant before completing his next. Mind you this occurred on a freezing December morning after we had just completed outting out 72 decoys.
After his blunder we picked up 72 decoys and proceeded to head home to dry off and warm up! Wrecked a hunting trip but kept him as a good friend!

Re: What is the worst thing you have forgotten on a hunting trip?
I'd say the worst I've done so far is forgetting to make sure that the vehicle can make the trip. Last year headed to Ukiah for elk on Tuesday night, head out of Hood River and stop in biggs for Diesel. Notice a small puddle of fluid under the truck. No big deal, just ignore it.
Well, we stopped again in to top off before we head south, and notice a lot more fluid coming out. Hmmm, maybe we should head back and try again tommorrow. We made it as far back as Boardman before there was a fairly high pressure stream of transmission fluid flowing out of the truck. Ended up spending the night in the trailer there, having the truck towed into hermiston for a complete transmission rebuild, having the Rental Center in hoodriver drive out a truck for us and the camper, and made the trip back out to Ukiah in a subaru outback instead, minus trailer.
So remember to put automobiles on the checklist next month.

Re: What is the worst thing you have forgotten on a hunting trip?
Nothing...YET!
I'm pretty anal when it comes to checking and double checking whether or not all my stuff's there, before I leave for a trip. Whether it's camping, hunting, fishing, etc. Ask my wife...she HATES when we go anywhere. First, i've gotta print the list, then put a check mark by each item as I set it in the living room. Then, when it gets loaded into the truck, it gets a line marked through it. As we're pulling away, i'm still going over the list outloud and when I turn and ask her if we got everything, she's usually glaring at me by now with that look, and her response usually usually goes something like this, "YES, YES, YES...you have EVERYTHING. You printed the list, marked it off TWICE, and the truck is loaded. YOU HAVE EVERYTHING SO SHUT UP AND LET'S GO!!!!!"
So far, it works though...

Re: What is the worst thing you have forgotten on a hunting trip?
My strategy is to pack over a period of about 5 days. Each day i get a few more things out, by the day we leave there is a giant pile of gear in my living room. I keep most of my camping stuff in 2 rubbermaid containers so i don't have to worry about finding individual items. When i go hunting my gun is the first thing in the truck and i NEVER take my license out of my wallet so i don't have to worry about forgetting it. So far so good.

I'm with Bill Monroe, let's just say my hunting partner had a miserable day listening to my 'whining'.

Re: What is the worst thing you have forgotten on a hunting trip?
One time opening morning of deer season I picked up my buddy and about 10 miles out of town he said SH%&$ I forgot my license and tags at the house. I turned around and was giving him a pretty hard time all the way back. As he was in his house getting his tags, I reached into my pocket and #&%%. I had left mine at home too!! It was his turn to give me crap then.Believe it or not we still hunt together and ask each other everytime " got your license" before we head out.
