Default Cutthroat Fishing over the weekend

I went Sat and Sun to the Tillamook area. Fished the Kiltches and the Wilson in a few places. Each place i caught one or two fish. The nicest fish i caught was behind the Burned guide shop. It was about 14" or so. It was my first time dry fly fishing for cuts and i had a blast. I am new to fly fishing and it was alot of fun to see the fish come up and take the fly. I always figured they would just slowly come up and gulp it, but most of them flew out of the water at the fly, it was a very fast take. The only public place that i know of to fish from the bank of the Kiltches is the second bridge you come to, that has a big L in the river. My wife and i caught a few there, and seen a few large ones swimming, probably spooked from us. Is there any other public bank acess on the kiltches?
Would be fun to meet up with a fellow ifisher sometime and hit a few spots down there for some cuts...
bwt i was using and elk hair caddis until i lost two of them..and a irresistable adams.
It was even fun to see all the small fish jump for the fly's. All fish were released and i was using barbless hooks.
They sure fight alot harder than planter rainbows!!!
Donn

I'd go with ya, I'm away this weekend but would be interested next week or anytime. I hit the Trask on Sunday with no luck, I'm no pro.

Another soft spot of mine. Take your pick as soon as the rain adds to the flows and the cutts are like bulldogs. Kilchis, Wilson, Trask, Siletz. My favorite is higher up in the rivers right where the water is fast but not white. Plop a fly and boom. Any fly... humpy, wulff, etc... Especially early October.

Buoyant flies like the Clarks' Stone allow you to fish it dry...skitter it at the end of the drift...and then strip it back submerged. Cutts are suckers for this technique. They really like movement....not surprising since they're piscavores when larger.

Would I be under gunned with my 3# or should I bring my 5#, or my 7#?

All of the above would be fine but 7# is a bit heavy. You might get lucky and hit a large cut but a 5 weight will handle it. I enjoy fishing a 3 weight and highly suggest it. If you fish low on the river you may want the 5 for casting distance and control.

I've found that a 3 wt. is more than sufficient when you're up in the river system. Personally, I usually fish an old wonderod with a 5 wt. on it, just in case I tangle with a steelhead but I have landed plenty of good sized SRCs with my 3 wt. quickly...

take your pick...7 would be a bit over-gunned, even for those steelies in those coastal rivers (at least in my limited experience fishing for steelies)
