Coastal brown and down!
Called him in Saturday morning- first day of East wind and hot.
Had another bull going first thing in the morning but the wind
got me. Started with cow calls and proceeded to bugle after
a bull answered. This guy screamed like no bull I've heard before,
it felt like it was coming from way down deep and I'm pretty sure
the ground shook. They had gone down a main roadway but I was
certain he wouldn't come back up the road (too open) I dropped
down in the 25 year reprod and setup. Once he committed it literaly
sounded like a train on hoofs coming through the forest. The wind
was out of the East but would occasionaly swirl a bit, figured he
might wind me but LUCK was on my side (this time). He came in
exactly the way I needed ,below me and broadside. As many of
you know when your calling by yourself they sometimes come straight
in- I have not taken one of those shots yet. At 22 yards I let him
have it right behind the front shoulder- when he took off I called
to get his attention I could hear him gasping and the same time
the second bull screamed right behind me. I wanted to give this
bull some time so I backed out and figured I would like to get a
look at the second bull. It took about 25 minutes and a lot of coaxing
but he came down right above the road and worked over a hemlock
at 25 yards. This was the nice wide 5x5 that turned up on my trail cam
the week before season. He eventually winded me and snuck back up to his newly found harem. My bull went quite a ways before bedding but
I had a lung and his fate was certain. I posted a photo of his eye teeth
they both had decay or cavities-never seen this before.

This is the second bull! Any other day and I would have tried for him.

OK, I gotta know: how in the world did you get the skull clean, white and dry? I need that method- might keep the critters at bay. No pics of the fresh kill? we love those! great job on a great bull- when it rains, it pours! Dave

Thanks for all the compliments guys!!!
If you skin and boil a skull as soon as possible the meat and
grisle removal is much easier. I have a stainless pot custom
made for elk skulls I cook it for about 4 hours removing it
from time to time to cool it and scrape of meat and clingons.
After it air dries I put it in a pan with about 1/2 gallon of bleach
only put in as much water as needed to cover the skull. If the
center between the antlers is not submergred soak a rag in the
solution and lay it between. If you get a little bleach on the antlers
stain will cover it back over. You can leave it in the bleach soak
overnight. Be careful not to overcook a skull it will get soft and seperate!!!!
I have 2 digital cams a Canon and an Olympus for my back pack.
My Olympus failed me miserably on this outing.
Good Hunting

Chug,
Didn't have him on trail cam but had a visual in late June.
He was with a group of 5 and of course he's not the biggest!!!!!
I did see this bull the night before opener and hunted him first

Great Bull!!! and congrats. Thanks for the info on how you clean the skulls. I have always had difficult times trying to boil and get them white. I usually stick to the old bury in the ground trick. Awesome job.

Awesome bull, well done!
Do you have a green score yet?? After the season is over and I get moved into my new place, I'd like to talk to you about your cooker for the skull; it sounds like a great set-up!
Congrats again!

Re: Coastal brown and down!
congrats, and way to be in em. very nice bull! I got back into where i had two screamers last weekend and got on em in the first 10 minutes. He did not want to play this time and took his cows away after the first bugle, unfortunately wasnt able to get back on them. Did end up in his bedroom though and we came out of there with three sheds. He was a 6x5 last year and should be a dandy right now...wish he would give me a peak!

Also hydrogen peroxide works good to bleach white. Hasn't the odor either. It's more expensive but not too bad.
Congrats on the fine job all way around.

No I haven't seen it, but have heard of it. Probably an old bull and living in an area that has a lot of grit in the diet. I take it this is a southern coast bull??
The old bulls wear down their teeth and develope cavities, he was in need of whistle tooth surgery. Looks like he got it to me!
