Default The Secrect Hole

This was written by my old fishing partner back in 1995. He passed away in 1998 but it still holds today.

If you are like most people who spend any time at all fishing our states waters you probably have a secret spot or a "secret hole". This is the place where you are convinced that the next world record lunker is hiding out. You are also positive that nobody with a K-Mart special rod or better has a clue that your "secret hole" exists. Well I thought I had found myself one of those magical places that only exists in Outdoor Life magazine a few weeks ago. A good friend of mine told me about it and said that "no one else knew except one other guy". After a couple of trips to the "secret hole" and a couple of nice springers I'm as happy as a seal in a school of salmon. Now I don't always like to fish by nyself so from time to time I take a friend with me and just because he has a boat that doesn't necessarily mean he will fish it too right? Oh yeah, I also told another good fishing buddy who wanted to know where I got those nice fish, and I KNEW he wouldn't say anything to anybody. Guess what happened the other day in the "secret hole". There was over a dozen boats there before I got my boat off the trailer. There were 6 boats from the club with enough club members to have a decent meeting. All we needed were the raffle prizes. As I'm trolling along looking at all the boats one of our club boats cruises by and the owner smiles and says."the fish are in here this time every year but there are a few more boats this year". Well hell, he must be the speaker of the meeting. .As I watch all the boats trolling around listening to fish finders beeping away giving us the secret locations of all the fish below. It brought to mind a naval operation of sorts with depth charges soon to be dropped on these unsuspecting fish. I thought to myself this is a good time to find another "secret hole". This one is great for Shad, you know its the one in the Willamette in front of the park where all of the boats are anchored this time of the year. I knkow there has to be room there since everyone else is back at the Salmon "secret hole". Sure enough I found a spot just to the right of the guide boat and below the Bayliner.
Another GOOD friend told me about a "secret hole" by an island below Bonneville Dam. But I have my suspicions because the map he gave me was a Zerox copy. Who knows maybe I'll see YOU there. I'm in the market for more "secret holes" if anybody knows of any please let me know.

Now you know why people don't tell you where they fish. If someone asked where you caught the fish just say; "In the river".

Nice story and I know it's based on pure fact.

I do have a secret hole and I'll share this tip with a few select fellow IFishers like yourselves, so listen close.

This is a great salmon spot so gear up accordingly fellow Ifishers. Take I5 south to Eugene and take the hwy 58 exit and head east, keep going until you reach hwy 97 and turn right heading south. When you get to K-Falls, locate hwy 140, travel east to Lakeview. Turn north on hwy 395 at Lakeview till you reach hwy 20. Turn right heading east to Burns. Head south on hwy 78 to Burns junction, turn left on hwy 95 to Caldwell Idaho. The fish are here on the Snake, stay for a spell and rest your feet, catch a few fish and enjoy the sun. After a month or so (longer better then shorter) when you feel rested up, jump on I84 and head back to Portland. Now don't forget to invite the family, relatives, neighbors, co-workers and passersby to share in your new found hotspot. Heck, just place a front page add in the Portland paper and share the wealth. Good luck and glad I could help, enjoy.

Me........oh I'll be fishing that worn out good for nothing piece of ain't no fish in a thousand mile water near the sand spit......they call it 10...ummm maybe buy 10 or was it wanna be 10, could be buoy 10, anyway, lousy fishing for sure. And don't worry about me, it's going to be a little lonely out there with all of Portland fishing the Snake river hotspot, but I'll manage. Just say no to combat fishing,

Gregg
