Default Discovering The Ultimate Lure

We only have a couple days till the Bouy 10 opener, and hopefully the board will be filled with "I went to Astoria and limited the boat using a blue widget and a cut plug herring"

In the meantime, lets have a hypothetical discussion. Lets say you were playing around one day and came across the ultimate lure. You couldnt put this thing in the water without catching a fish. Didnt matter what method you were using, the lure goes in the water, all fish within 500 feet fight to eat it.

What would you do with this lure?
1. Market it making millions.
2. Sell it to a big tackle manufacturer for millions.
3. Keep it a secret and tell nobody, while you fish it yourself.
4. Keep it as a closely guarded family secret (does Amerman comes to mind ).
5. Destroy it and hope nobody else ever stumbled across the same idea.
6. Other ???

Keep in mind this ultimate lure would probaby change the way people fish forever, potentially wiping out runs of fish. It wouldnt even be challenging to go fish.

I'd do an infomercial and sell it for $19.95 plus $4.95 shipping and handling.

Let other people use it while out on your boat and then charge by the lb with all the fishe they caught.

If they don't like that idea have a nice day and swim home..

If it was truly as deadly a lure as you said, and it made it so fishing wasn't even challenging. I would keep it a secret and only use it when I was completely out of fish in the freezer.

Roy, by the way, Is this what you do all day at work? If so, are there any job openings?

First, I'd patten the idea and make my millions, move to the Bahamas, buy some beach front property, fish from my 56' Hatterus and live happily ever after.

Second, I'd GIVE one to Roy for Christmas so even he could catch a quality fish.

Your right about Roy, Tanner. Where can I sign up Roy, I need a new job where they PAY me to surf the web.

As a matter of fact we are looking for some more help. The boss hasnt figured out how the work has started stacking up since we got internet access to help me accomplish my job. But it is stacking up, and somebody has to do it, I am just way to busy.

If I could only figure out a way to not be in the office because I am to busy working. hmmmmm...

Now we all know that if there were such a lure, the next year it would be outlawed by fish and game departments everywhere, so I'd use it for a year and catch a lot of fish. After a year or so, it would get to be boring, so I'd market it and make millions. After it gets outlawed in the U.S. I'd market it in Europe and make more millions. I'd market it in a different area of the world each year, until I just got so filthy rich I couldn't stand it. Then I'd retire, and spend all my time fishing and giving money away to worthy charities.

Now the real hot product would be a beer that you drank that made you a better fisherman. Drink a bottle, catch a fish, drink a bottle, catch a fish, until you are too drunk to fish. That would make it self-limiting, and runs of fish wouldn't get wiped out. What would you do with that if you had it?

What a great question! I've asked myself the same thing a few times.......The best answer I have is to take out an ad in some bass related magazine about how this lure outfishes live bait 49 to 1 and get a bunch of phony scientists and doctors and crap to make outlandish statements in support.....and maybe then add an infommercial with a bunch of hillbillies' testimonials.....and sell a version of the lure that wasn't quite as good as the original (remember NEW coke?)and I'd make sure there was a part of the lure that broke all the time (like most manufacturers) and then I'd laugh all the way to the Bank of Alaska where I would live under an assumed name........Buyer beware!

Bait, did you go home this weekend or something. I think you were "impacted" by the "highlanders."

If you did invent it Roy, you could be world
famous like Buzz. Would you get bored with no
challenge?

I'd would use it only to prove that I was the greatest fisherman of all time.

Then I'd go on a marketing blitz selling millions of copies of my book to teach them how it's done. Of course the book would be full of sheep dung and I would never give up the ultimate secret. I'd just tell them that it's total skill in my ability to get into the pea-sized brain of fish and read their minds.

I'd teach them bogus ways to meditate and find your inner-self so that you can master your physic abilities. Next would be my 1-900 physic line, first three minutes free and $5.99 for each additional minute.

Last would be the infomercials late at night with one of those nervous british guys strung out on speed, telling the audience how you won't survive the rolling blackouts if you can't fish like a pro to feed your starving family. Of course each lure would cost only 5 easy payments of $29.99...no wait...if your one of the next 100 callers we will make that only 4 payments of $29.99 and you'll recieve this special simulated leather carry bag for your new lure.

A friend of mine had a lure like this at one time. Its brand name was (lucky lure) stamped into the metal. It looked alot like an Alvin but it had raised bumps all over it. The lure was a gift from a friend of his. He had two of these lures a small one and a large one. The larger one had a slower wobble and caught more fish. Before he lost it the larger one, we had gone out at Meldrum bar on the Willamette and he caught salmon two days in a row using that old lure. This lure was an oldie but a goodie. I havent seen any since. I think it would become a family heirloom if it were me........Fishhead Vic

We;re too late, Bait---

Charlie White already invented it and has made at least a $1.95 on it!

He even calls it the "perfect lure."

I have 5 in my tackle box and have used them for Coho with some pretty good success just trolling them 30' behind the boat.

He is the inventor of Scotty downriggers and the author of several books on fishing for salmon.

Too bad he's so much smarter and quicker to the drawing board than the rest of us.

I would use it as my "go to,first fish" lure. If the person I was fishing with hasnt ever caught a Salmon or Steelhead then I would put it on their rod for the first fish then put it away. It would only be used for the first fish ever kind of thing,or the last minute, only fish of the day. Kind of like an emergency only lure. Have a lil red box on the side of the boat or on my side that says for emergency use only! Of coarse I would never tell a soul what makes it so "special" It would just be my lil secret. A sure fire way to bring fish to the net.... well the lure of choice isssssss....dinomite!
It will even gut the fish in some cases. I have also heard that on the Willamette Electric shock to the water works well. Just throw in an overhead cable and drift down river with the net to scoop them up. Both are very effective methods for filling that empty fish box quickly. As for crabbing...I hear that seal pups stuck in a trap work well too. Poor thingszzzz.

Really, I think I too would use that special lure for myself. I would fish it right in front of the guides that had boat loads of clients and no fish. (except for guys like David Johnson, because I hear he is top notch). Especially the guides that you try to be friendly to and ask how its going. Then you ask how many fish they have and they extend their middle finger to indicate only one fish in the boat. Well, I think I would just have fun with it for myself. Besides, the Banjo Minnow has already been invented. So we are all to late.

Hey BOA, Did you use that Seal to go after and big kings? Or, was that you carrying that shark up the dock at Garabaldi on the evening news? Hummmmmmmmm?
