Default Which pole holder do you use and why?

'Yall and RT behave yourselves . I like the Scottys because the reels seem to seat nicer in these than the fish-ons. The side lock on the fish-on's is more convenient but the scotty's have a more positive lock. Also, I like to use my cabelas Qwick-draws for plugging and they fit into the same mount... Joe

Salmonator, you got that right! Scotty's are great. Dont know how many Fish on holders got snapped of over the years by excited clients trying to rip the rod out. I finally resorted to giving lessons on the proper way to take the rod out of the holder. No problem since I went with the Scottys. Fish On are a little cleaner looking though.

I've got Fish-Ons on both my boats. The only problem I've had is the slot is too narrow for sturgeon gear, so I ground one side down on several of them to allow the thicker grip on the heavy rods to fit into the holder.

theres also another plus to the scottys ,you can reverse the side plate and change the angle of your rod if you dont like the position the other way.

Pete, have to do the same with the scotty's. Only missed by a 1/16th of an inch or so, figures...

After years of knowing nothing more then fish-on's, I tried the Scotty's. Scotty's are cleary the better product, positive stop and solid side lock clamp. The fish-ons bottom locking nut always wears down and starts to rattle something terrible when trolling.

What I also like is the mounting bracket. Turns several directions and also interchanges with the larger stainless rod holder by Scotty. I use the larger stainless holders off the transom and the regular plastic towards the front. This way, I can just keep upgrading if I choose.

anyone try taking a belt sander to there foam handles on the sturgeon rods. I've done it to three of my sturgeon/boat rods and they turned out great .they slip out of the holders like the cork handles do.RJ

Scotty's also gets my vote. They seem to be heavier, rod and reel fits very well and quick to pull out on a hit, very positive lock and very stylish (very important when fishing...LOL).

Good luck

Scotty's all the way. Had fish-on's on the last boat. My sturgeon rods (Tiger rods) seem to fit in these without trimming.

I love my Scotty's for all the above mentioned.....They do adjust very nicely But i think i'm gonna put something at the top where the rod rests to cushion ...a little bit of rocking and the violent take-downs are starting to wear on the rod. TRUE RODHOLDER STORY

Several years ago a coworker asked several of my friends and I to fishing out near Buoy 10. We began rigging the herring and getting the lines out. As I was rigging another rod, I hear a loud "snap" and an "OH Sh--"! I turn around to see the splash of the rod, reel, fish, and the front half of the rodholder go overboard. The owner of the gear comes back to see what's going on. I sheepishly told him the rodholder broke and all his gear was gone. All he said was, "Dang! I hate when that happens." Good one NorthriverS! There may be another factor to consider when choosing a rod holder and that is where you can mount the holder, type of boat and the fishing technique. I have a glass DB and the location for the rower rod holder is limited. Fishons in front(will check out Scotty's)but the rower holder needs more height since there is no gunnel. Bob from Piscatorialpursuits talked about the need to keep the rod near level while plugging(RT also added on)and so a rod holder advised by Bob was the RAM. I bought one and the beauty of it was that it added just enough height to keep my rod near level and plugs and divers running correctly. There are flaws in it but it adds the increased height. You can check it out at www.ram-mount.com

I personal use scotties. Because the price was right. They have yet to this day cost me anything????????? . Of course after Mr. Fisherman reads this post I'm sure he'll give me a call demanding $$. Seriously I love them. Thanks Pal and let me know when you need me to settle up. So answer me this, since I'm too lazy to go look. How do Scotty rod holders mount? Same bolt pattern as Fish-On? If I need to drill a bunch of new holes in my boat I'd be reluctant to switch. Nothing worse than holes in a boat.

Pete, you will need to wallow out the holes a little bit, but not much. I have used fish on for ten years and decided to try a new rod holder when the rail mount Fish On rod holders were either slipping or breaking. The plastic on the Scotty's is softer and works better for rail mounts. The Scotty rod holder is better designed not to "slip" down when a fish hits. Its upper lock is also better in my opinion. One by one, as the Fish On rod holders break, I am replacing them with Scotty's. They get my thumbs up.

Pete,

The bolt patterns are very similar, not sure if they line up completly. Both brackets have 4 holes close to the same dimensions.

Scotty

Check out the striker rod holder, good for larger rod handles, a little more spendy but nice.
