Anyone going out after Halibut Friday?
I am really torn on wheather or not to go, it would be the first real test of my new engine, confidance level is still pretty low for me! Are they picking them up a tthe rock pile still? or do I have to go all the way out?

Re: Anyone going out after Halibut Friday?
Sturgn,
We go all the way out.
If you are concerned about your engine you should go do a long trip on the Columbia to shake it down. Pilar could recomend a good route to let you know if yer boat has the stamina and range to tackle the Chicken Ranch. If there is a problem you are FAR better off finding it in the Columbia than out on Big Blue.
If ya make it perhaps I'll see you there.
Good luck,
Mr. F.

Re: Anyone going out after Halibut Friday?
Ya Pilar, has a good test he had me drive my boat from chinook landing and go up the columbia until it meets the snake and then go up the snake till the end and then back again. He said if the boat can make that trip three time without breaking down then maybe I'm ready to tackle the chicken ranch. Seriously make sure you have all the kinks out this is not the time that you want to have problems. As Intel's Chairman of the board would say "ONLY THE PARNOID SURVIVE"
Just kidding about Pilar he has been very helpful and I'm looking forward to meeting him this weekend.

Re: Anyone going out after Halibut Friday?
Thanks for the confidence votes. In all seriousness, try a run before you go to big blue. I like the run from Chinook Landing to Bonneville and back. Same mileage as the Chicken ranch run. The main thing you must know before you go is what your fuel consumption is. You should be able to run this stretch nonstop at about 20 mph and still have 1/3 of your fuel left when you are done.
The nonstop trip is all about finding things like a slow overheat problem or bad fuel pump. It is good to see common sense applied. Be wary of the Ocean but go prepared, with the right gear and with a well maintained boat and triumph!
We'll be pushing off at S. Beach Marina at dawn Friday and Saturday, weather permitting. If the water at the Chicken Ranch is above 61 degrees, we may also drag Tuna gear and see if they are there.
Last August there were quite alot of 6' blue sharks lurking 20 miles out on the surface. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fish them?
PS: BTW there is a 'Rockpile' Halibut thing in August. We got some there last year while bottom fishing. E-mail me for the #'s.

Re: Anyone going out after Halibut Friday?
Pilar,
I caught Blue Shark down in Mexico when we were trolling for Mr. Pointy Nose. We were dragging whole mackeral at about 8 - 10 knots.
Grind up a bunch of chum and drag some large herring or shad strips or something and you could probably get into them. Also if you spot them, stop and cast to them.

Re: Anyone going out after Halibut Friday?
Hi RJ. Yes that is a thought. We intend to fish Friday and Saturday. Look for me to go after Tuna on any weekend flat Ocean day to the end of the summer. You and Wak are welcome to tag along. More boats is better. It's easier to find the fish when you cover more water.
How does it look today? The forecast is iffy with S-SW winds. How about a mark I eyeball report?
The distance to the chicken ranch is approx 32 miles depending on which hump you fish. There is another hole at about 29 miles on the same bearing from Newport, I dont know what it is called.

Re: Anyone going out after Halibut Friday?
Yikes was that an ugly day! We left Newport at app. 6am, crossed a nasty bar, went out about 7 miles, and the water was getting worst, looked like the waves where starting to break, we decided to turn back! The boat handled it ok, but we where getting hammered and it looked like it was getting worst! Maybe next year!
Well off to B10! Woohoo everyday til the middle of september!
