Default Live Bait ?

I'm looking at doing a livebait trip on Sat. I would like to get some help on where I can jig up some live bait on the CR? And when in the tide it would be best?
Thanks for the Help Dogs.
I'm going out of Illwaco. So a wingman would be nice also.

I am trying to do a run on Saturday as well and I think live bait is the only way to go this time of year. I might try Friday night in the harbor... anyone have any ideas?? Best practices?

Thanks,

Anthony

Mike
Do you want to borrow my cast net and try it in the harbor?
I left my jigs on my boat in Depoe bay or I would let you use those

Hank,
I tried my cast net last year without success. 12 ft dia 5/8" mesh with lots of weight.

The schools were down about 5 feet, and it seemed like the anchovies saw the net and escaped before it fell around them.

I did here of someone using a dragg type net which scoops up more than a boat needs in 10 min.

Believe that if you use a net it needs to be pretty dark. Chovies will ee and avoid the net in daylight.

HiTekRdNeck ... between 12 and 14 over by the breakers. And almost everywhere else last fall. Remember? I have heard reports this year about schools up by the Astoria bridge. Hopefully you don't have to run that far upriver to get some anchovies.

I would use birds diving, especially pelicans as your bait indicator. When you get in the vicinity you'll see the anchovies on the surface and just under it.

Got a full crew yet?

Last Saturday and Sunday, there was a huge school of bait at Green Buoy 11. We could have jigged up all we needed there.

You guys are just using the sabiki (sp?) jigs right? Any squid on the little hooks or just as they come?

Nope, just a sabiki with a little weight on the end. Jig away....3-4-5 or 6 at a time if you are in a good school.

Anthony, just use them plain and put 2 to 3 oz of lead on the bottom. Do not handle the fish at all if possible. GRab the hook and shake the fish free into the tank. The way I did it last year was to have three folks jigging and one putting fish into the tank. Be sure to have some 5 gallon buckets for each fisherman. Lots of chovies in the harbor now (finally) but you have to jig them before to much daylight hits the water.

Had good luck last year targeting baitballs near the south jetty in the bird bangs. Can fill a tank pretty quickly out there with a coordinated group of guys. Bring your short rods. (trout)

Best sabiki rigs are the ones with the green glow bead. If you have a cast net and spot chovies in the shallows behind the charters row that would be the best place for it to be deployed.

As always Bernie... thanks for the information! I do not have a cast net and I will have to check the color of my sabiki rigs. I was hoping to put some in the tank on Friday night / early Saturday morning.
My next issue is fuel... my dad did not top off the tank before he headed home (damn parents ) so I need to find a work around there. I am certainly not above bribing the fuel dock attendant! LOL!!!

Anthony just call Dave and get his sorry butt out of bed. He'll gas you up. Call him ahead of time to make arrangements.
