chastised on the Deschutes
On Thursday I made the long drive to the Deschutes, my first time on this river.
I managed to hook a nice 8# hatchery fish. The fish was very acrobatic, jumped 4 times, which my 3yr. old loved. She was standing in the water next to me, and squeeled at every jump. We were both having a good time.
As I was carrying the fish up the bank a fly fisherman was walking by. He asked if I was going to release the fish and I said no, it is a hatchery fish.
At this point the guy, let's call him purist eco freak, began yelling at me for even thinking of killing and eating such a wild and beautiful creature. I then reminded P.E.F that it was not wild it was a hatchery fish. P.E.F. continued to yell and really took a dump in my sunshine. I put the fish down walked up to him and told him to take his disrespectfull *** up the trail before things get ugly.
I did have my daughter with me so I couldn't tell him how I really felt, lucky for him.
Is taking fish from the "famous Deschutes" some kind of taboo behavior??
Or is this guy just the exception?

Re: chastised on the Deschutes
Tell the guy to find a nice, strong breeze......and pee into it. Obviously a case of some know-nothing's inability to tell a wild fish from a hatchery fish. You should have put the slimy thing right upside his head so he could inspect it more closely.

Re: chastised on the Deschutes
I've had simalar situations in the past. I consider myself a "treehugger", but im also an active fisherman. I think this guy was just another extremist, as thier seem to be on both sides of these "earth" issues. They usually shut up when they see the garbage and "nickles" me, my wife and kids pack out with us. it's too bad some people ae so quick to condem. I have found that most fisherman care alot about clean water, air, etc... I teach my kids to respect our rescourses, i've seen some ugly things, such as those transformers dumped into the columbia by the bpa. that deserves condemnation. we all have a vested inerest in our waterways and fish runs. its "duty now for the future". hatchery fish are here to be eaten! they do not have a brain that feels pain, only fight and flight. im usually good at shutting up those whacko's, and i've got alot of experience at it too!

Re: chastised on the Deschutes
The worst part was that it happened in front of my daughter.
On the way back to the parking lot she said " Daddy you weren't very nice to that man". I said " well that man was mean to me first". to which she replied " just cuz somebody is mean is no reason to be mean back". I was busted there =0)

Re: chastised on the Deschutes
Hatchery fish are raised to kill! If you were not interested in eating the fish then fine go ahead and release it but it's just a fact that that's what the hatchery fish are for! The guy was way out of line on this and should have kept his arrogant mouth shut and not rained on your parade I doubt you will find anyone on this board that would disagree.

Commedian Steve Martin would have gone up to that 'blinded' man and said "I slap thee I slap thee I slap thee" 3 times with the aidpose missing brat fish - then pooped on his boots.

Please do not call this person a Purist!!! He is an ARTIFICIALIST!!! If he is a fly fisherman, then our government lists him as using artificial flies and lures for his pursuit of fishing. You can find these terms in our state fishing regulations. In my book a Purist comes under the classification of Mother Nature. Things that are pure.(worms, sand shrimp, salmon eggs, herring, sardine, the list goes on.) When we are on the Deschutes we are required to be artificialists. I recomend plugs and spinners. Have fun fishing and ignore the idiots out there. It frustrates the hell out of them.

Re: chastised on the Deschutes
I bet the fly fishing guy never got bit and he was in a bad mood when he seen a hardware fishermen packing out meat. It drives one user group (fly fishing) crazy when the other group (hardware) is doing better. If everyone catches fish the river is a happy place. Harvest every hatchery fish...them's good eaters.

Re: chastised on the Deschutes
Sean, great job on the fish and taking your daughter along. Despite the jerk you ran across today, I hope you do it again..and again. Man what a wise 3 year old, you can't get away with anything these days.

Re: chastised on the Deschutes
LR,
I believe that I know this individual. He usually acts a little 'psycho' with the added help of alcohol.
FYI - he was mouthing off last year to a guy on the Lower Deschutes because he thought the guy was 'in his spot'. Anyway, he then found himself waking up in The Dalles hospital. True story; he got whacked.
Sounds like he hasn't learned yet.... Too bad it was in front of your daughter! On the positive, I'm glad you had a great time fishing! (catching)

Re: chastised on the Deschutes
What about those of us fly-fishermen that eat hatchery fish? Is this something that I have to go back to my psychiatrist for? And I thought I was making such progress!

Re: chastised on the Deschutes
If you don't understand, you need self-help. Here, take this quick test.
1) This zealot was:
a) Simply letting you know that he is a better person than you.
b) Trying to cover up a deep rooted anxiety over his inadequacy as a fisherman by hoping to distract you from noticing that you had a fish and he did not.
c) In his own warped way, testing the theory, that good father would not, in the presence of his child inflict bodily harm or foul language on someone even though the person was begging for both. (You passed that test.)
d) Outraged that you would even consider killing something had a striking resemblence to his only girlfriend in life.
e) All of the above.
If you have taken this test and have chosen any answer, congratulations, you pass and do not need further help at this time.

Re: chastised on the Deschutes
Hey Carver,
Not all of us "purist" fly fisherman get frustrated when we don't catch fish on the Deschutes. We just pull out our spinning rods and hardware.

Re: chastised on the Deschutes
I have flyfished the Deschutes for years, and I have run into a couple of these so called PURISTS. I believe that they mean well; however, they were not taught properly by their mothers that not all people agree with your particular point of view on a particular situation. They are just extremist PURISTS. They think that everyone should be JUST LIKE THEM. I think the best way to deal with these "PEOPLE" is to use what I call the WAD approach.....
Wave and Dismiss. Just wave and say thanks for your input....and leave.
Of course you could just give them the bird too.... Kidding....
