Scope or me?
I bought a Savage 30-06 Model 111FCXP3 from Bi-mart with the 3-9x40mm Simmons scope. Anyone else have get this gun and have problems with this scope/sighting in? I know its not a top notch scope but I am having some troubles getting it sighted in. I got a different set of rings right away because the originals kept loosening up on me and the guy in Bi-mart mounted/bore sighted it. Everything is tight. I shoot 1 or 2 in the bulls eye and then I keep throwing them left anywhere from 2-6 inches at 100 yds sort of randomly.
Thanks

Re: Scope or me?
i had the same gun and used it for 3 seasons with the original scope without any problems, if it is consistently going in the same spot you might be flinching? or maybe your gun shoots better clean than dirty? or cold vs. hot??? how far off is it?

Sometimes it takes several boxes of shells through a new production gun to "lap" the barrel. Shoot it, clean it, repeat repeat repeat... If after say 100 rds it is still throwing shots. Get a new scope.

Re: Scope or me?
My buddy put me through the "flinch" test at the range because we thought the same thing. I passed. I also shot his 7mm with no such problems. Well I will try again but I think it might be time for a better scope. Thanks for the info.

Re: Scope or me?
Hmmmm??? Now you all have me wandering. I just put a simmons scope on my 30 06 . I have never used a simmons before so thought I would give it a try. Do Simmons scopes usually have alot of problems or are they an ok scope?

Re: Scope or me?
They're OK scopes, but scopes and optics are near the top of the list in the "get what you pay for" category. Even the major names make products at each end of the affordable spectrum in order to get to those who want some economy (sanity?) in their purchases. Difference is that the low-enders of a major company like Leupold, etc., are generally better quality than the high-enders of a Tasco or Simmons because there's more of a reputation to protect.
Give your Simmons a tryout in the rain and elements, just don't be too surprised. It'll probably be just fine.

Re: Scope or me?
Thanks for the input Bill. I have a few different scopes and chose this one because when looking thru it, it has an oblong view rather than round. kinda different. I guess I will take it outside the next time it rains and check it out. I have an older V-II Leupold gold ring series if this fails.

Re: Scope or me?
It is hard to say without watching you shoot, but it is likely the scope.
When I shoot my competition gun, shots to the left could just be poor natural point of aim (this is possible even off a bench), or poor trigger pull.
Your natural point of aim needs to be dead on the target, and you need to pull the trigger straight back, and smoothly. Also, your head placement is likely to be moving around on you; ie, if your head is dead center one shot and it shoots center, then you accidently put your head on the left side of the stock, the shots will go there.
Make sure you get consistent cant, and watch the wind.

Re: Scope or me?
Oh, another thing that could be happening is that the barrel is leaded up near the crown. This is possible if the gun is new. Just brush the crap out of it.

Re: Scope or me?
Make sure you follow the break in instructions for the rifle. I persoanlly have never had a problem with my simmons scope on my Savage 7mm (7yrs old I think) however its safe to say the quality wouldnt be as good as the higher end scopes. Tthis is the from the Savage Faq page:
FAQs: Barrel Break-In Procedure Q. What is the barrel break-in procedure?
A. Although there may be different schools of thought on barrel break-in, this is what Precision Shooting Magazine recommends:
STEP 1 (repeated 10 times) - Fire one round
- Push wet patches soaked with a powder solvent through the bore
- Push a brush through the bore (5 times in each direction)
- Push dry patches through the bore (2 times)
- Push wet patches soaked with a copper solvent through the bore
- Push a brush through the bore (5 times in each direction)
- Push dry patches through the bore (2 times)
- Push a patch with 2 drops of oil through the bore
STEP 2 (repeated 5 times) - Fire a 3 shot group
- Repeat the cleaning procedure from STEP 1 after each group
STEP 3 (repeat 5 times) - Fire a 5 shot group
- Repeat the cleaning procedure from STEP 1
They recommend the use of a patch with 2 drops of oil after the cleaning so that you are not shooting with a dry bore. It is also advisable to use a powder solvent and copper solvent from the same manufacturer to be sure they are chemically compatible.

Re: Scope or me?
Not too long ago I bought the Model 16FXP3 – with AccuTrigger™ .
.22-250. It had the same Simmons scope on it. I had no problems sighting it in and it worked great. I couldn't afford a high-end scope AND the rifle at the same time so I got the package deal so I could at least be able to shoot stuff until I could afford the better scope.
I was talked into trying a Burris by a co-worker.

4.5X-14X-42mm
Good price, very clear optics.
From what I have heard a low to even mid-range scope on a hard kicking high powered rifle will eventually bust out the reticles. My .22-250 is a very light gun and it has a respectable shoulder punch.
When I got the Burris I put the Simmons on my Model 93R17-F .17HMR
Good scope that has assisted hundreds of Sage rat kills and a badger or two.
IMO, that scope you have does not belong on a 30.06....

Re: Scope or me?
Lots of great info. More than I expected. Thanks everyone. I plan to go back to the range Monday and try a few of your suggestions out. I will post results then. I talked to my buddy here at work who is the "gun guy" and he gave me some pointers as well.

Re: Scope or me?
Well I think I got er lined out. I ended up going with a buddy with a good bench rest. Tried for a while with same results and figured out later on that the directions for adjusting the scope in the Simmons book that came with it are all screwed up. It says to go up or right turn the dial in the direction of the arrows. To go down or left go in the opposite direction of the arrows. It has a D or a U and a L and R with arrows pointing obviously in the direction that you should turn the dial. Should have just followd the arrows! So its backwards in the book. I threw the book away. Even after still I went back to 50 yds and started all over again. Got it sighted 1/2" high at 100 yds. I feel pretty good about that. Never the less it was me not the scope. Lesson learned. Dont make fun of me too much. I had a heck of a time with the scope since I got the gun. I busted a screw on the ring, then they put new rings on and it was not high enough and the back of the scope was pinched so I couldnt adjust the magnig=fication and then I had to get another set of rings and mounts etc... But now its done. Thanks for all the help from everyone!

Re: Scope or me?
That's a vote of confidence for potential Savage package buyers (me). oh hey, perhaps you'll consider branching out and posting in another thread! haha. all your 4 posts to date are within this same thread!

Re: Scope or me?
Note: "Up" makes the crosshairs go down and "left" makes'em go right.
This is a std convention.
Now imagine clicking in 10moa and EXPECTING to make a 750yd hit on a 12" steel plate.
One day I might make 750....w/ a new rifle......for now I'll stick to 500.
I don't think it will have a Simmons mounted on it though.
Good luck, I hope ya get it all figured out.
